Warning to those custom placing HU's, REAR CAN BE EXTREMELY HOT!
Well, this is kind of obvious if you think about it, but I did NOT think about it.
I have been toying with the idea of custom placing my new Alpine HU in a spot of the dash that was NOT intended for a HU (not a DIN). SO, the space is really tight, and there are a lot of thin (24 ga?) cables back there belonging to a variety of crucial harnesses of my car.
Well what do you know... the rear of the Alpine HU may touch against these cables, and believe me, the rear fins get extremely hot. So hot that I could not touch them with my finger for more than 2 seconds, or get a nasty burn.
I can't prove it, nor do I want to, but I would have to guess that if any of those cables touches the fins for a good 30 seconds it will melt right through the plastic shielding. Disaster.

By the time I drive to my parents' place from school here (4 hour drive), my Alpine deck is thoroughly heated enough that the front panel is quite warm. If I were to eject a CD from it at that time it would be quite uncomfortable to hold on it.

If you ar not using internal amplifier, it will not get hot.

tried something similar with poor results. put a sony HU in the center vent area, was a tight fit on the sides but ~6.5cm rear clearence, would overheat after 15-20mins of cd play (longer if radio). Only the rear speakers were using the HU amplifier (low gain), the HU would still overheat with no internal amp use. Kept the vent duct blocked and unblocked, blowing air at a range of temperatures, would still overheat. Ended up having to move it.
Im sure it varies substantially by brand and quality, but HU's heat up, even if not using the amplifier. Cold weather quick installs could be problematic in a couple months if weak wires are close by.

I have no more than 1 cm clearance on the back. And there ARE wires back there. I am going to give up on this idea, and try to relocate the main HU body to another place, and wire the faceplate to the front.
