Transfering Files with USB cable or Ethernet Cable

I have a new computer with a network card hardwired to the motherboard. I have a old computer with a network card in a PCI slot. Both seem to be fully installed and working. I have a few ehternet cables. But no hub. How can i set up a 2 comptuer network to transfer files between these computers. Both have widnows XP but when i set up a Local Area Connection it seems like nothing is happeneing and the LAN Says "network cable unplugged". Both the computers i ran network setup wizard and they have different names but the same network name. I have enabled file tranfer on both. It just wont connect. Can anyone help. Is there a way to just use my USB cable? Thank you.

You have to get a network crossover cable to network 2 pc's directly. This cable has pins 1 to 3 and 2 to 6 crossed over. You can buy them at most computer or electronics shops. You can also build one yourself. pics here. To use USB to network 2 pc's also requires a special usb cable. The easiest way by far is to use a network crossover cable.
