Dying HD?

I know HD death has been discussed before, but this is wierd.

I have had a 30gig seagate hd from new... i bought it about a year ago. I used it in the car for around 6 months. It was mounted horizontally, and it worked fine. When my car was taken off the road, i used the HD in my main pc (athlon 900). Again, it worked fine. Until yesterday

I was listening to winamp, when the computer froze for about 30 secs, and the HD was making clicky noises. Then the computer start to work fine again, exept winamp went onto the next song.

I done a thorough scan disk, and it found about 1/4 meg of bad sectors. The frozen computer/clicky HD thing happend again today, but scan found no errors this time... i`ve got it backed up now, just in case

Wtf is going on? Is the HD dying? Would the warranty cover it even though it`s been in a car? Is this common or Am i being paranoid? plz. help.

It does sound like its dying. i would make sure you have the instruction manual handy because i think those have 3 yr warrenties. Ive hard drives go bad before which have similar sounds to what you described. The sound can be best described as like a ball bearing clunking around inside the hard drive.

Yeah, if you're starting to get bad sectors, the drive is probably starting to go. I work under the mode of don't ask don't tell. So unless they specifically ask you "Did you drive around with this in the trunk of your car in a computer," don't say anything

. Also, I wouldn't consider using it in a mobile application as abuse, so the warrenty should stand, and as razor said, a lot of drives now adays have 3 year warrantys.

There IS a reason they refer to that noise as the "click of death." I'd say that the drive's days are numbered. You should be able to get an RMA number pretty easily if the drive is less than 3 years old. Most of the time, they don't even need a receipt...just the serial number from the drive.

I would go to your local computer store and ask if the have a spare hard drive shipping box you can have, as the manufacturer will require it to be shipped correctly or they won't honor the warranty.

just do an advanced replacement - thats what i always do. you give them your credit card number to garuntee it and they ship you a new one. you can do a drive copy (if the old drive is still readable) and then put the old one back in the new box to ship it back. by far the easiest course of action. I have found the HD manufacterers very accomidating about RMAs.

As others have said, the drive is dead. Send it back for an RMA replacement.

FWIW, HD manufactures are very complient with RAM requests because 90% of computer users blame any problem on the HD. Anyone who works at a retail shop can probably confirm this. So the manufactures just take the drives back to avoid the hassle of arguing with a customer.

I've returned many a hdd (did one just a couple of weeks ago). Find the manufacturers number on the drive or online and give them the serial number. No receipt required. Piece of cake.

Incidentally, I did a window mod on an old WD 4gig a few weeks ago and the sucker is purring like a kitten! Not a problem since! However, Murphy's law went into effect and my 6 month old IBM60GXP 45Gig died. Typical.

i got a wd 18gig hdd thats been sitting in a removeable hdd in my home pc, only time been in car when driving to friends house and bringing pc.

now i turned it on and it isnt detected in bios and doesnt seem to spin up, so i think thats pretty screwed, need it to back up stuff on my raid in case that stuffs up too.

cant find receipt, but im sure i have one somewhere, hopefully get a replacement.

MikeHunt79: i had to send a bad drive back once and as Meatballman said, make sure it is packaged according to their standards. I had a problem with this once, luckily they were nice about it! Secondly, i will also praise advanced replacement (smashr2k's response). Its nice to have the drive extra early and not having to wait, because it could take a while, and most of us computer guys hate waiting for packages. Just some words of advice to help you.
