well, i took apart a laptop to put in my system, but that was mainly due to psace requirements.... it is hard to fit anything else under a mustang seat. if you have the space go with actual pc components, otherwise use a laptop.
which route in any of your opinions is the better to take?
should i go for using a scrap laptop or pc bits for the bilk of my system?
cheers in advance

any other veiws???
, the good thing about a laptop is they run on batteries and dc power... So, if your power is not run straight to the battery and if you turn off your car, the laptop will switch to abtteries when it looses the signal. Thats one good thing. But, dekstops are cheaper and more robust than a laptop. I would get a desktop... But what ever floats your boat..

I have been working to put a Gateway Solo 9150 into my Intrepid, but the parts, being proprietary, are expensive. I've been trying to find a replacement DVD/LS120 combo drive for it, but so far the cheapest they have gone for on eBay is $80 or so, with few guarantees.
That being said, should I locate the drive I would still install it, as it has most of the difficulties already solved (power, power usage, "ruggedized") and has all the ports I would need, including built0in Dolby 5.1.
All things considered, the laptop route is more expensive, but I think will work well.
I'm also simultaneously putting together another 'puter for my minivan based on the FV24.
Hope that helps.
I'm going the laptop route, but again only for space. I would find it very difficult getting anything bigger into the boot of my MX5 (Miata), theres already 2 amps in there.
I would have prefered to go the component route though, only for update purposes.
I bought a Sharp PJ-P2 laptop from an auction site, screen cracked. Its a PII 233 and reasonable spec. When I got it, I then realised that it had no inbuilt parallel or serial ports - just USB, no floppy drive or CD Rom drive. There is very little info on this laptop on the net (lots in Japanese but none in English), so now I have to figure out how to run my LCD etc... parallel-USB convertor etc.... Getting software on wasn't too bad as I have another laptop with all the bits in it, so I put the harddrive in that and copied the OS on etc. Now I can network between the two.
The best thing about the laptop though is that its the size of a magazine, takes up no space and weighs nothingJust building a PSU for it, then it can be fitted....
actually its Austin Powers, Danger's my middle name.....
If you guys are gunna buy laptops, get them on ebay.. I picked up a p2 333 with 12.1 color tft and cdrom ect for 105 dollars... It had built in network and other goodies.. It was just missing the hard drive and battery... I built a p3 650, 15.1 tft, 20 gig, 2 batteries, 160 ram, firewire built in, video out and video in, dvd, usb, modem ect for under 650 for a personal computer.. they sell gateway solo parts buy the bunches for cheap... I think a solo 2150 would be great for in car.
Over kill 850 for cheap so far
of for just mp3 decoding try this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=2008169544
