    Question Carputer Newbie

Well after surfing this board as a ghost for about 1 year, I have fianally decided to build my own carputer for my Durango. In would like to incorporate DVD/GPS/MP3, etc and to do it using as much of on hand invertory that I have. Addtionally I would also like to make possible for my kids to watch a seperate source in the back seat, from the one displaying up front. I plan on using a P200MMX with 64MB RAM, and 10 gig HD. Addtionally I currently own a 13" TFT LCD with a CHIPS controller, as well as several other old laptop TFT screens. My intent is also to purchase either a ATI or Hollywood card fro TV and DVD decoding. So basically my question is this, if I use the LCD w/CHIPS controller (which is a PCI card by the way), can I indeed loop back the video from the ATI card and also hook up 1 or 2 addtional 5" screens for the back seat? I also have a old P150 laptop with 80MB Ram and a "Zoomed Video"n port. is this good enough for DVD playback?

    Thanks.

P.S. I have searched the threads numerous times trying to find an answer, but have not been able to find anything specific.

sounds like you are going to be pushing those processors really hard to do dvd. i dont even think they make the suggested cut-offs for minimum processor speeds for dvd. check on some dvd packages online to see what they recommend for minimums. sorry i couldnt be more help .

    Another Durango

Great! As of now I was the only Durango guy on this board? At least the only one that has spoken out lately??

I have a decked out 2001 Durango that is in its third Generation carputer. It is a lot of fun and you will find yourself always wanting to upgrade.

I started off with a 5" LCD. Then now I have an 8.5" Touch screen (which will be for sale shortly) and I have a 10.4" Touch Screen on its way.

I also have a 7"W LCD that I was going to use as an additional monitor, but might scratch that idea and sell also.

If you plan on using your 13" LCD for DVD I hope it is not a 12 bit screen. DVD and Videos look like crap on those screens. 12 bit only has 4096 colors.

Once my new screen comes I am building an enclosure in it to put in my truck. Will be covering it with vinyl to match the vinyl dash and Leather interior. the screen will have a carbon fiber frame around it for the coolness factor :-) Then have to clean up some wires and then I will post pics.

    I have features such as:
    Mp3 (6500 Mp3's)
    DVD, VCD, Divix, etc.
    GPS with VOICE capabilities
    Internet Acess through SprintPCS
TV throgh ATI All in Wonder Radeon

My computer is a SV24 and I have a 900 Mhz VIA processor in it (VIA runs a lot cooler and does not require a fan, although I still have one on) It has 128MB ram at this time I beleive. Then it carries a 40GB Hard Drive. I also run it through an inverter at this time.

Things that will be for sale:
DVD Player (plays MP3 CD's, DVD's Etc.) Also is a TV Tuner built in. This is an actual portable DVD Player...like what you would have in your house only SMALLER....very neat..had it for 2 weeks, but changed system plans to use one screen so I can get a regualr PC DVD drive.
7" Wide Screen LCD (Lulliput, got directly from HongKong..very nice screen with awesome picture)
8.5" Touch screen LCD with graphics controller card. Complete and ready to go.

Good luck on your project and keep in touch. let me know if you found a way to wire in a AUX input into the factory infinity system...or maybe you didn't get the premium sound??

    Nathan

P.S. Where the heck are you mounting a 13" LCD in a Durango?? I thought my 10.4 will be pushing it!!

    Carputer Newbie

mp3Z24, thanks for your input. I realize that my specs are pretty low, but ATI states that the AIW 128 should work on a MMX system, and Hollywood says that their decoder is fine on a p133. I just wanted to see if anybody has actually tried or seen it in use.

nolmscheid: Hey it's great to see another Durango user here on the forum. I would love to see pictures of your setup if possible. My Durango is Platinum, 2000 SLT, that I bought used 2 months ago. I got a great deal, but without Leather or Premium sound, becasue I knew I would be doing a lot of after market customization, so these items were unimportant. In terms of my display, it comes off of a computer that was used at onsite contruction jobs. The screen is either 24 or 32 bit so the resolution should be just fine. As far as the mount, I am building a custom center module next to my 4X4 shifter, that will blend in with the current console. It will have a slide down window to hide the LCD when not i use. It will probably take 2 inches of leg space away from the passenger side, but that will not be a problem.

Another question that I have is re: these touchscreen systems. Can you purchase an adapter that turns an existing LCD into a Touchscreen? If so where, how much, and what are the limitations.

    Awesome

24 bit or 32bit LCD. I have not seen many of those in this forum. How much was the screen. Or are there a lot of you guys out there with a 32 bit LCD??

I also have a platinum color. Mine is a 2001 SLT with the works.

Best place to research LCd and touch screens and such is at
    www.earthLCD.com

I will post pics when my system is finsihed.

yes you can get a touchscreen overlay and controller that you can mount to anything. hell you could put it on the wall and look at the monitor if you wanted to.

argh. i have a link on my puter at home for a guy in a pathfinder the put a 6.4 with an overlay in his dash, i will add it to my post when i get home. he has costs for the overlay kit that he bought.

check out elo , they have a lot of info on touch components. for that size, i bet it would be spendy!!!

    EDIT
here is the link that i have for the touchscreen guy:

nolmscheid: May be I'm incorrect, then. I'm probably thinking of the video resolution that it gives in Windows. Basically though it's the same type of display that I have on my Laptop.

    About using your LCD controller:

First of all, is that LCD previously part of a laptop, or is it one of the new style desktop LCD monitors? If it's the former and requires a LCD controller to work, then chances are that it's 16 bit or less.

Second, I believe the CHIPS LCD controller card acts as a video card, so unless you can loop the other cards (ATI and H+) into that CHIPS card and then out to the monitor, your answer is "no, you cannot make that work"

Crazy Little, the LCD is actually form a PC that kinda resemble a small suitcase (industrial laptop). You are correct in saying that the CHIPS controller works as a video card. Because of this has anyone seen a way to only use it as a controller, and if not are there any options for looping back the signals?

You know, if you dont want to watch DVD on YOUR lcd in the front, you could just use a hollywood plus card to output the video without loopback, and use some sort of rca video y-converter to get it to multiple composite LCDs in the back for your kids if you needed

a hollywood plus card will do all the processing so you should be able to run DVD off it even with a Pentium I...
