I am planing frist to use X-10 RF Remote. Then I plan to add a touch screen. From what I've heard the modem is atached to a normal serial port. This would be perfect for a touch screen interface. Come to think of it, that serial port should work for the IR-Man as well.

yes, the orignal page has been updated to allow you to add a serial port COM1(ttyS0) the modem is on COM2 (ttyS1). You can also add an external VGA connector. Adapters are being sold at http://iopener.liquidhotdog.com/ but are easy to make yourself if you have the knowhow.

Using the USB port you could transfer data between the iOpener and the host PC. There are several ways you could approach this, but the easiest way I see would be to set up a system where you could talk over TCP/IP and send commands back and forth. This would take some custom programming, but I bet you could make a pretty nice system with it.

I ordered one. The guy told me the stuff's been backordered and the ps2 splitters don't work, so they'll send it soon.

I got my i-opener yesterday in the mail. Today I called them to cancel my service and the guy played dumb. He said it had already shipped, and that I can't cancel. I said I wanted to cancel my billing, and he said the unit and the service go hand in hand. I said that I signed no contract, and that if I did, there would have to be a pre-defined early termination fee, since they're not allowed to bill me for something I don't want anymore. There was no contract, no minimum term of service, and no early termination fee. What they're doing is highly illegal.

    Thumbs up

Lifter, just contact your credit card company and tell them they are charging for a service you did not agree to nor authorized via a contract, etc. They will dispute the charge and remove it from your bill. As long as you didn't sign a contract saying you would pay for X amount of months your okay. And even if you did, your right if they did not provide a 'buyout' clause they are pretty much screwed!

Also, it is no more illegal to modify this device for your personal use that it is to rip the tags off of your mattress or paint your tv blue! The reason for the stance is to prevent a potential market of people modifying and reselling the devices for a profit.

Yep, as posted on slashdot, netpliance has started making the newly shipped I-openers "un-hackable" and is now requiring ISP service with all the newly shipped iopeners. post can be found here:

    Thumbs down

    I ordered an i-opener on the 17th..
/. readers report that there haven't been any changes to the design, and this was just hype by them. However, the people at circuit city are lying ****s, and despite being told that my order would be in this weekend, it won't be in for another 3-4 weeks. So I bought an old computer for $50, and I'll just have to make that one my mp3 player.
