wow you could build a whole system off of that if you have room in your car! I'd try it but dont know enough about Linux or electronics and would end up blowing $100!

the screen itself is worth the buy! Plus a machine running at 180mhz!

You can actually run windows on it if you want. You can also upgrade the CPU if you wanted. A 2.1 gig laptop 2.5 inch hard drive costs about $75. So that cost has to be added. I'm definatly gonna get one. For the price, it's worth it to have around, even if it doesn't work out in a car. Nice cheap small footprint LCD system!
Hey this looks great! is there any way to just rip the lcd out and use it in a car for my pc???
In a word - "No"
It would be the equivalent of ripping out a laptop screen and finding a LCD controller.
Basically, you will need to take apart your screen and find out what kind of LCD it uses. Then you will have to get a datasheet on it (good luck). Once you have that, you might be able to get a controller card and wire it correctly. You are looking at $150 to $250 for the controller card and a little digging around to find a datasheet.
Which basically begs the question...why bother when you already have a machine capable of decoding mp3's included in the Iopener?

That will take five minutes max. Then with a PS/2 keyboard and USB mouse, you can be up and running windows in less than an hour after you get the thing.
Hey, this thing seems like it would marry up well to the lp3 hardware mp3 decoder that runs off of the printer port. Gonna have to see about picking one of these up and playing with it.
Is there any chance of hookin' up a 3.5" hd?
stupid question prolly, but I would like to know
If I buy this thing, are they gonna bill me for dial-up service?
xaos - I suppose you could use the lp3 with it, but 180mhz is plenty for decoding mp3's without it.
SSJGogeta - You could hook up a 3.5" but you would have to provide your own 12V power and mount it outside the case.
Lifter - you are not required to sign up for the dialup.
All these questions and more are answered at the FAQ:
fastolfe.net/misc/i-opener-faq.html
and at the official bulletin board for the iopener hack:

They have also started selling the mod-kits for $35 at the site in the first post! Now you don't even have to hack the thing!
