    Is a case really necessary?

I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but I don't know what words to use to search for it.

So, is a case really necessary? Is there anything wrong with laying all the components out on the floor, aside from the obvious fact that they'd be rolling around?

If this has been covered before, and you really don't feel like answering my question, I'd appreciate it if you'd at least suggest some search words..

Of course, a direct answer to my question is preferred.

okay, so if it's secured someplace, it's okay, then? Or is there more to it?

I'm trying to figure out what the case does for the computer, besides just holding everything.

It prevents things from touching each other. You wouldn't want the motherboard shorting out on something.

    It also grounds everything together.

You could get a sheet of metal, and screw everything down to it, and call that a case if you want to

Motherboard stand-off posts screwed down onto a metal grounding plate I think would be the most "stable" case method. I mean some mobo's probably need an extra ground wire aside from the AT/ATX PSU plugs.

I think in a car, the case serves more as protection than anything else. You just know that you'll make a hard stop one day and something will crash into the player. It happens to me about once a week. Depends where you put things of course, but the possibility is there for sure.

A case provides mounting points for all the components, and keeps things from loosening up.

A case looks a lot better than a bunch of computer components strewn over the floor.
