Acer and Mac (amongst many others) have been doing it for a while.

The form factor is the same, so its pretty easy.

ok that one was easy but this one's more hard. battery pinouts 4 a dell d510 latitude. it won't power up threw the adapter jack, but if u charge the battery in another laptop and put it back in it will work fine, so maybe i can power it threw the battery pins

The D510 is just like most laptops by HP, Compaq, etc that all have a weak power jack. I have purchased laptops that do EXACTLY what your describing and after replacing the $10 eBay jack they work fine. Dont reinvent the wheel by hacking up the battery connector, just replace the bad part!

EDIT: just checked eBay..they are more expensive (by quite a bit!), but still likely the issue. Plug in the adaptor and check power on the board, I bet it isnt getting thru the jack.

how old is your 510? still under warranty? dell will in most cases just send you out a replacement part and you send back your broken one.
