Screen turns off after 5 mins?

    HI all.
I am curently using an old compaq armada 1750 in the car wih the in dash screen to test out and develope software/front ends before I jump in with both feet and build something (about a year or so before I accumulate enough funds for this anyways).
The bloody thing shuts the screen off (lcd and the external) if you don't touch it for 5 mins. It also won't come back on by touching the in dash screen, I have to open the trunk and touch the built in mouse pad!
I've set the power options to always on regardless of battery/plugged in condition. Monitor is set to "never" for when to turn off the monitor.
I can't get into the bios with f10 (compaq has it locked down), only this stupid compaq diagnostics partition so no help there.
Any idea how I get this bloody thing to leave the screen on all the time? It's quite a pain on longer trips when I've got a long playlist going and teh screen goes blank and the music keeps playing (remember, only the displays go off). Am I missing something obvious? Are laptops defaulted to shut the screens off irrespective of the windows power settings?

    Cheers

Well, I know in some BIOS's you can enable "resume on USB" I think. I know you said you're locked out, but there might be a similar Windows function or a software that can override this. Also, you might be able to flash the BIOS with the new version. There should be someway of getting into the BIOS no matter what brand. I've gotten into a Compaq BIOS before and it wasn't that hard I don't think. Try other buttons too like "Del" or "Esc" or sometimes "F10" and another button. If you have a logo on the screen when booting try to get rid of it using "Tab" or "Esc" and see if it says press "Magic Button" to enter setup or something. Also, what OS are you running? If your screen automatically shuts off when USB connection is broken, then check out that you have disabled USB power saving modes in XP. Have you tried it in another or a friends computer to see if it is yours or the screen?

I'll try once again to get into the bios, but it's been a common thing with the older compaqs. I do have a compaq screen during the post check, but it will not cancel no matter what I try.
I'm using tinyXP, an nlite cut down 785 meg install created by someone called eXPerence.
My toshiba satelite seems to do the same thing also. Maybe it's a laptop thing.
As to the usb thing, well.... this is going to sound dumb, but I'm not even sure where to look to disable it.

    Thanks for the ideas.

Well to disable the USB power thing, Do this:
    1. Right Click "My Computer"
    2. Select Properties
    3. Go to Hardware tab
    4. Select "Device Manager"
    5. Look for "Universal Serial Bus Controllers, and expand the list
    6. Find the one that best matches your touchscreen. If you don't know which it is, then just do the rest to all of them. It doen't hurt anything except for battery life, but in a car it won't matter.
    7. Right Click the item
    8. Select Properties
    9. Go to the 5th tab (I think), and it should be something like "Power Management"
    10. Uncheck the box that says, "Allow XP to shut off power to this device to save battery" or something similar
    11. And to solve the problem with the only way to bring the screen back up, enable the , "allow this device to get the computer out of standby"

    Try that first.

If that doesn't work, then how old is the computer? Might be able to help more if i knew more!

    Well, that seemed to work!
I found the dialog (not exactly where it was supposed to be) and unchecked the box. I let it sit for a bit more than 10 mins and no screen off. BTW, its a compaq armada 1750 6366/t/6400/d/m/1 pII 400 from around 2000 or so with only 192 megs of ram (I'll be trying a pIII 500 processor in soon). As I said, it's just my mule for software right now, something thwt runs well on this old horse should be great on a newer machine.
    Thanks bro.
Now if only I cold get into that damned Compaq BIOS...........
Nothing seems to work and I've tried almost every key on the keyboard.......

    cheers
