    Harddrive questions.

Hey everyone, I'm new to this world of carputer stuff.

I'm not really interested in car audio per say but I'm doing a carputer because I have alot of files and stuff and it would be a great way to multitask.

I have been doing barely any posting, and alot of reading but I can't seem to find something to address this.

I'm putting a carputer in my 06 Mini Cooper S and had some questions about Harddrives. I've decided to order everything from here and not newegg or whatever because I don't want to cheep out. I don't want to have power issues and all of that stuff so this place is great!

Now, I only see harddrives up to 100GB. The problem is, I have ALOT more music than 100GB and work files too I need at least a 500GB hard drive. Is it possible to get one of those for the carputer?

I guess my next question is, would it be a better idea to get, let's say, and external one for my car and just take it out when it get's cold or whatever. My trunk is actually part of my car so I'm not too worried about temperature. For those really cold days that it's below zero I'll worry (I live near NYC) but it's only a few days out of the year.

What would I be looking at in terms of power consumption for an external and how could I hook this up? Anyone do this? Or maybe someone can recommend me a hard drive another source, maybe New Egg that has more storage space?

    Thanks for everyone's help.

    I found this from NewEgg.

Anyone have any experience with it? I think rigging an additional external harddrive somehow would be the best way.

YOu can use any HDD you want.
I'm using a full-size (3.5") HDD in my setup and it works great. Plan your setup properly to accomodate for a full-size HDD and run whatever HDD you want.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

What kind of carputer are you running? Do the motherboards on this site support a 3.5" HDD? I would LOVE to run SATA.

I had a P4 system in my truck. Got stolen and/or torn the **** up but dont limit yourself to just what you see on this site. What i had isnt for everyone it was a power hungry ***** that was hard to get working at first.

For a calculator on power i use

As far as temp problems with cold i never had any but i live in Kansas. Heat was a bigger concern for me.

As for the maxtor you are looking at it should work just fine. I tend to shy away from OEM products though. I always try to get stuff that says "retail."
But thats usually just for processors. Thats a pretty decent price on a 500 gig though.

    hope something i said helps

I order a ton of stuff off NewEgg, and there OEM stuff has yet to fail on me. Even if it does, I guess there's eBay to resell! Well a harddrive shouldn't fail if it is this young in any occasion. I say young because 16Mb cache 500Gb hard drives are relatively new, like a year and a bit at most. I use a 3.5". The only difference is of course size and power conumption. It does eat more, and requires a good 12v rail because that's just what 3.5"'s do. The whole shock thing is in my opinion overrated for the price. If a 3.5" fails, you can get like 3 more for the price of an equivalently sized 2.5". Also a 2.5" will fail to if you jerk it up and down constantly.

Conclusion: Up to you! Buy the 500Gb if you have space and power, and the 160slim if you need space are are wanting to use a case from this site's store. I think they only support 2.5".

    Good luck.
