2001 Jeep GC... Not sure where to begin...

    Hey all,
So I've been a viewer of the forum for a long time but finally decided to post...

Originally, I wanted to just switch out the stock CD player and put in an aftermarket, but I decided against it because apparently I would lose the functionality of the steering-wheel controls. Does anyone know of a work around to this?

Secondly, I'm thinking about putting an LCD and computer system in my car... but I don't know where I can squeeze either in... and allow for proper ventilation. Does anyone have any experience with this and their Jeeps?

I've got a budget of about $1000 and I want, minimally, a built-in GPS system. I just figured I could go all out and see if I can't also get dvd-playback and such in there as well. Anyone have any solution suggestions? Thanks

    Woody

No GC (regular Cherokee), but I can offer some advice.
Rewire steering wheel controls to interface with comp. Ditch stock cd player and (hopefully) replace with an aux in adapter. If aux in can't be had, you'll have to replace the HU. (or use an RF modulator, which sucks)

I mounted my LCD on a bracket sitting out from the dash. Didn't want to mod the dash.

$1000 should be more than enough for what you want. The display will be the most expensive part (usually). Head to the store to see prices on those. You don't need much processing power to play dvd's these days, but do research on some of the mini motherboards to make sure they fit the bill (if you're going mini).

    hey Pato,
I checked out your website with your pics... pretty cool stuff. I think I will keep my current stereo for the sake of simplicity, but I can get an aux cable to plug into the cd changer port and connect it to the computer.

I'm thinking I want to go the mini computer route... I'm just not really sure where to tuck it in my jeep. I'm sure i can figure out a place to mount the monitor... can you recommend some parts or computer systems? I'm kind of a cheap bastard, but I don't want something that's junk. Also, I noticed you put the cd-rom in your glove box... kind of neat. I wonder if I can't somehow squeeze it into the center console somewhere.

Lastly, I originally only wanted a GPS but since then, have read more about these computers. Can the computers do GPS as well?... or do I need to get special hardware/software in my comp? thanks Pato

Here is my .02... Go to the classified forum, there is a guy there right now looking to sell a computer he built with a 7" touchscreen for like $500. Hell of a deal! Pick that up and build it into your truck then you have extra money to buy some amps for the speakers! Run the CPU audio out to the amps and enjoy your new touch screen.

You can stick a computer almost anywhere you want. If you live in an extremely warm or cold area, you'll want some amount of ventilation. Probably want to keep it out of the engine bay due to condensation (but I've run inverters in there with no problem)

You'll need a separate GPS receiver and software (check the store). If you want the GPS integrated into a front end, you might need to spend money on some additional software - check the software forum.

You lucked out with the AUX adapter! Saves you alot of moola with no loss in sound quality! Spend the extra on better speakers/amps.
