    'Nother newbie....

    Hey, pholks....

I've been interested in this sort of thing for quite some time, and have just recently decided to try to integrate a pc multimedia system into my car. The 'donor' car is a 1992 Pontiac Trans Am convertible, and I've nicknamed the whole thing 'Project eT/A'. I hope to be putting up a website soon to more or less document my attempt (emphasis on the word ATTEMPT) to do this without my car ending up looking like K.I.T.T. I've got a rough inventory list worked out... if anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated! the list is as follows:

Powered by a Pentium 2 166mHz 'puter, 192 mb RAM, 10G HDD, CD/R drive, radio/TV tuner card, mounted in the trunk

Software will probably be Linux slackware... also installed on my home pc via a dual boot system

Display will be a 5.75" LCD screen

Interface will be via console mounted touchpad and an I/R remote

Data transfer via I/R home network system

I'm hoping the LCD will be small enough to fit where the radio is now.... thinking of just removing that panel and the radio altogether. If it will fit, then I'll pick up a spare panel from the junkyard to do the cutting on. I'd really love a touch screen, but I don't think I could afford one of those right now. This system will be used primarily for mp3 storage and playback, but will also be used for movies, GPS, and hopefully real-time weather and traffic updates via cellphone internet link. Some pics of the car can be found at [url]http://www.knology.net/~barefootboatnik/images/ filed under 92 Trans Am Droptop

    Any suggestions will be welcomed!!

I'm thinking of taking the deck out altogether... not enough room for everything. The audio will come from the computer's sound card, and amplified through a BOSS 640 watt amp to my speaker/sub setup. Hopefully this will work ok.... it's all gonna be a learning process for me, and I plan to glean as many tips from this forum as possible!!

i could be wrong but the orginal pentiums went up to like 200mhz maybe 250mhz, so a 166mHz wouldn't be a petium 2....... would it?

Sounds like fun. What back/front end software are you planning on using? If you're handy with code, you could probably write a nifty interface in X. Freshmeat has a ton of GPS software and Cajun seems to be the best for MP3. Lirc will take care of your remote.

You and I are probably the only two on this board powering their systems with almighty:

Let me know how it goes!

Coincidentally, how well is linux as for providing touchscreen drivers? I have a datalux 10.4" touchscreen and really the only thing keeping me from running slackware on my machine is that i'm worried I won't be able to get the touchscreen (probably the best part of my setup) working because there are no drivers for linux on the manufacturer's website.

Well, it's an MMX chip, so I assumed it was pentium 2.... I could be wrong tho!

Pentium 1's went up to 233, and were the only chip to have mmx and nonmmx flavors. P2's and onward had mmx. And whats wrong with KITT? You dont want the nice talking car with the bargraph in the nose? keep us posted.

Let me set this straight, the Pentium chip came in these higher MHz flavours:

    166 MMX
    166
    200 MMX
    200
    233 MMX
Player: Pentium 166MMX, Amptron 598LMR MB w/onboard Sound, Video, LAN, 10.2 Gig Fujitsu Laptop HD, Arise 865 DC-DC Converter, Lexan Case, Custom Software w/Voice Interface, MS Access Based Playlists
Car: 1986 Mazda RX-7 Turbo (highly modded), 1978 RX-7 Beater (Dead, parting out), 2001 Honda Insight
"If one more body-kitted, cut-spring-lowered, farty-exhausted Civic revs on me at an intersection, I swear I'm going to get out of my car and cram their ridiculous double-decker aluminium wing firmly up their rump."
