    Question Double-Din VGA/USB Head-Unit?

    Hey guys (and girls),

I am on a search that seems to be a road leading nowhere. I can find plenty of Touchscreen head units (with VGA inputs) by companies like Alpine and Clarion, but none of these "touch-screen" units allow the option of controlling your carputer with the "touch-screen" (via USB or PS2).

Ideally, I would like to have a fully dedicated (FM/AM/CD/DVD/XM-or-Sirius/AuxInps/BackupCam, etc...) head unit in my car (I don't want to have to turn on my computer to listen to the darn radio) with VGA input and usb output for when I do turn on the PC. I do have this now, but I am using two single din units (a DVD disc player by JVC and a Lilliput VGA/USB touch screen). I really want to make this a single sleek unit.

Like I said, I can find double-din units with everything I want EXCEPT for the darned USB output for the touchscreen. I thought of getting a unit I like and try to mod the touch-screen controller (hardware) to output to a second source, and if anyone has done this, info on what you did would be great! I would prefer a solution from a real hardware vendor though, as I don't have the best soldering skills and I really don't want to void my warranty.

    Any ideas?

    Nate

I dont think this can be done like you want to, I dont know of any head units that their screen can control a PC apart from that you would have to have a switch somewhere to go between the head unit and the PC as you cant control two items with efectively the same mouse at the same time. You could overlay another touchscreen but it might make the unit too thick and or cut the light output too much. You would still need to work out a way to disconect the input to the head unit tho.

All good points Scimitar. I thought about a second touch screen, but I think that would prevent the one underneath from functioning. Depending on the USB touchscreen controller, I SHOULD be able to use the output for both systems, but the best way would probably be a switch like you suggested. Ideally, depending on the video input in use, the switch would direct the touchscreen controller's output to the appropriate place (USB or HU). Sadly, all of this is something the manufacturers could accomplish much easier than I.

the head unit touchscreen might not and probably isnt USB so there is probably no way for it to control a PC directly with it as the controler is probably built drectly into the HU board. TS are USB so they can be used on loads of different PC's but the screen of a HU is only ever intended to work with the HU its built into. Its a good idea and I can see a market for it but I just dont think it can be done without some tricky DIY at the moment. I have the oposit in my car as in I have a TS for the carputer but I cant control the headunit with it even although DVD and all that is displayed on it although all the HU menus show on the TS so it isnt all bad as the HU has a joystick to go through them on screen.

Hey, just wondering, would you be so kind as to find the model numbers of these brand name LCD receivers (in dash) that have a VGA connection on the back?

    Peace,

there are none, there all s-video at best.... & not great solutions for a pc display in the first place...., but you knew that

to get the touchscreen to work can be done, but it's not easy & because of the reason above, it isn't even worth doing in my opinion....

    Alpine (not double-din): IVA-D901
    Eclipse: AVX-2494

Sorry, I was wrong in my recollection about Clarion (Thought I remembered seeing one at BestBuy).

    Hehe, you said it

    Anyway...

I do think modding the TS controller will be too risky on my budget. The USB issues are really not the problem, because in theory I could snip the ribbon cable before it hits the HU's built in controller, and branch two new ribbon cables off of a switch. The only problem being is the HU dependent on the USB input to function? If the switch were to cut the USB input (and voltage out to drive TS), I don't know how the HU's software would react. My guess is it was not that well developed to know at runtime if the USB is functioning or not, but prob at startup it would detect... but this is only a guess.

Anyway, unless someone wants to shell some money my way to try this, it's not gonna happen.

The reason I'm asking here is, I spoke with a guy named Chris at CCElectronics in NY on the phone about the Eclipse unit I mentioned. I wasn't sure from the Website if the touch screen they advertised was USB out or not, so I called one of their retailers (Chris). He assured me they were NOT USB out (which really sucks), but he told me he remembered distinctly seeing exactly what I'm looking for somewhere and he'd get back to me if he found it over the weekend. Well that was two weekends ago and no response ...

So has anyone else seen something akin to what I'm looking for?

If you have a double DIN slot, why not use a normal head unit and a fold out touchscreen (both single DIN)?
Alternatively you could use the CarTFT K500 which has an RDS radio built in and is a VGA touchscreen. It's also single DIN so you could use the other space for something else (an EQ would be cool)
