USB sound + USB DVD = SLOW

Alright how do most people do a good dvd setup?

I have an Audigy 2 NX USB sound card, and a pioneer sloat load DVDRW drive through usb converter. both are usb 2.0.

Works great playing sound. Works great playing video. Toss in a DVD and leave audio enabled, and it stutters HORRIBLY.

The system is a P4 2.0ghz, 512mb ram, so im thinking this is a USB problem.

Im using a low profile case, so its difficult to put in a true sound card. Is it worth cutting a slot in my case panel to stick an Audigy 2 into the case or is there an easy solution for this type of problem?

DVDRW is mounted in dash, 6' cable to powered hub, 3' to dvdrw. This one has to stay usb... im sure USB should have enough throughput for DVD?

Well the USB port can only handle so much data at one time. If both are plugged into a hub, then the bandwith available for each device is cut. (5 ports is 20% bandwith). I believe that is how it works. So 480Mb/s for USB2 and 12Mb/s for USB1 divided by 5 is 96Mb/s and 2Mb/s respecively.

I guess I should ask, are they both plugged into the same hub?

you could always get a usb pci card and try making that fit. They are smaller then a good sound card.

Both are running off a USB 2.0 pci card. The card has two ports, one for sound, the other runs up to a hub in dash for touchscreen and dvdrw.

When i get some free time ill try to play dvd without sound to see if it plays smoothyl, then if it does ill try an audigy 2 itnernal sound card instead of usb.

You might consider getting a second USB card....
And yes the USB bandwith (and voltage) is divided between each unit.

Are there any USB ports on the MoBo itself? Try putting the touchscreen and other low bandwith units on them, therefore reducing the stress on the 2.0 ports.

I think both GPS and the TS can be put on 1.1 im not sure about others.

My USB sound card was on 1.1 as well and it worked fine...maybe try that.
