Can anyone help me with this?? I would like to be able to transmit and receive files from my carputa using light.... The distance of transmission is no more than 50cm... but teh problem is the I need fast 2 way transfer... anyone know how to do this using the parallel port?? or possibly using teh data lines of a standard network connection?? thanx in advance..

RS242 port, IR LED on the TX data, and photo diode on the RX data. You'll need a few other support components, but it'll work. I had a mate at uni do a similar think with a couple of lasers so that he could connect the PC in his room with one of the Uni servers, work ok exxcept when somebody walked through the beam!
And you say people actually pay money for M$ Windows?

Total re-design underway: on the whole progress is very slow as the car is taking up too much time :)

try irda.org . This should give you alot of information about speeds, distances and the like. There are also adapters that are sold which (I think) just plug into the serial port.

    *UPDATE*
Premade USB adapters can be found here

UPDATE: I moved farther north. Now its even too cold for the deer; only moose now

ok - that sentence tips me off that you're trying to copy/stream mp3's into your car, and I'll be the first to tell you: don't bother. You're going to go through way too much hassle and expense for something that's slow (because iR transfer is only as fast as a serial connection, i.e. 112k top speed with 0% loss)

You're better off just using a nice piece of cat5 cable and a pair of cheap network cards.

I have another problem... it can't use the parallel port, as this is being used my the LCD, nor the serial port, these are being used by the remote control and buttons (maybe) and is too slow. IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN USE THE STANDARD NETWORK PORT??? JUST THE 10M/SEC.. THESE HAVE A SINLE TRANSMIT AND RECIEVE LINES, DON'T THEY??? Couldn't I just modulate the light to "flash" the data that is recieved by the other card somehow.... Apparently you can read data from the led on a network device, like see what is being transmitted and recieved...??? anyone know about this??

using the COM/Parallel ports will make the transmission slow regardless of the transmission medium (wire/radio/light/etc) since parallel ports and serial ports are SLOW to begin with....

try copying some files between PC's using a laplink setup and you will understand what I am saying!

    2 * NIC's = $40
    Some network cable = $10
Having decent transfer speed = priceless!
    Project - GAME OVER :(

I already have 2 nics and a couple of different lenght crossover cables...
But, I want to be able to drive my car into the driveway, over a tranciever, so that it is under the car, and then be able to send and recieve mp3s to and from the car player.. I don't like the idea of cables cos if I want to add files, but didn't plug the cable in, I have to go all teh way back outside to plug it in.. And, if I forget to disconnect teh cable, and go to drive out... ohh noooo....
