Smile New guy needs help with VIIV CarPC

OK guys after much reading i have decided to begin my Car pc project. I have some experience in both car audio and in computers so im hoping i can successfully get what i want out of the system i build. To that end, iv'e decided to use some pretty new hardware. I havent really seen people speaking about VIIV or core duo processor based systems so but im still hoping that the great expertise of the people in this forum can help guide me in the right direction. I have a lot of the hardware throught out but i need some advice on some of the others. Ive put question makrs on the items i am unure of and im hoping the team here can help me in choosing the best matches for my setup. to that end is my list of hardware :

    Intel core Duo 1.88 GHZ
    ASUS N4L-VM DH Motherboard
    1 GB ddr-2 Memory (512x2, PC5400)
80GB Hitachi Hard drive (USB or IDE???)
    Power supply????
    Liliput 629 screen
    USB Bluetooth adapter?
    Bluetooth GPS receiver?
    USB WIFI card ??
now the reason i chose the VIIV platform is because of power consumption. under full load this setup should only use 50w of power. this motherboard is goign for a pretty good price also, so my budget should not get astonomical.

Does anyone have any experiencde with this MB?? any recommendations on the hardware im missing? thanks.

Before you go much further, I'd recommend reading this thread: New to CarPCs? Don't know where to start?

It will help to answer your questions before you get started. Like the questions you have about the power supply for instance.

As for the bt adapter, wifi, gps, find the respective forums and start reading up on what people are using and why. You will get some great insight into what's available out there.

    Welcome BTW!

Thanks Red!! i had read your post a while ago and have to say that its one of the best posts on the forums. The PSW question was more of a wattage related question as this board doesnt suck up a lot of powerbut i dont want to sell myself short. i saw that the mp3car store has a lot of different power supplies to choose from , and didnt know if any one had any recommendations on which would work best on my MB, Also the MB has a 4prong connector as well as the standard atx power connector - do most power supplies have this? thanks again

After seeing this board I've decided I really want to make the change...thanks a lot damnskippy....lol

As for the PSUs, any one that provides enough power on all of the rails should work fine.

I know it's pretty $$ but I've decided that for my next iteration, I will be going with the DSATX unless something new comes out between now and then that looks to be better.

I gotta tell you i was really not going to go this way but i saw this board on newegg for 140 and went for it (normally these boards go for 230+ like the 945gt that others are talking about) i went o fleabay and got the chip for 168 shipped so im getting close to finishing my hardware setup for less than 700 which is a good deal for a regular carPC.

one thing thats worrying me about the board is that it says its mini atx but it doesnt really look like one. also is mini or micro atx smaller? thanks.

I thought it said it was a Micro-atx?

    micro is 9.6" x 9.6"

    mini is 6.7" x 6.7"

I and a couple other members are building system that are intel VIIV compatable. I don't think there is any advantage intel VIIV on a carpc but it should be cool to have. Check out the thread . Why don't you go with a SATA HD for your setup

Kalt - one reason I wasn't so interested in that board for my personal use is that it doesn't have an optical out.

For me that's critical. It's critical for quite a few people on here actually.

Sure you can run a PCI or external sound card, but why when you have the option of having an onboard optical out?

The i945gtt has optical out, it comes with a Toslink Digital Audio Fiber to Mini-Plug Adapters for optical in/out. i don't why aopen did not list it in the specs.

    Dimensions: 4 x 3 x 0.5
Converts Toslink ends to Mini ends
    Simple snap-on adapter
