Sometimes BIOS autodetects, sometimes not, WHY?

So, I am running my system at home for instal VERY soon (hopefully)

    I am using an FV24, 256 RAM, currently a 20 gig HD, Pentium 3 900, and a Desktop PS.

I have a CD ROM connected to load things. Everything worked perfectly.

I then disconnected the CD ROM, and got stuk at the Verify DMI POOL tool. So, I entered the BIOS, and checked to make sure I had no extra boot devices, and that the now removed CD rom was set to NONE.

Tried again, same problem. Went back into the BIOS, and everything looked fine. Connected the CD ROM again, and it booted fine. Removed it, and checked the BIOS again, everything was fine. Tried to boot, again, stuck at the Verify DMI pool tool. Hmmm, back into the BIOS. Tried to autodetect the HD (there is no CD ROM now) NOTHING? Hmm, reconnected the CD ROM, and then back into the BIOS and auto detect, everything detects fine. Disconnect the CD ROM, can't auto detect. Anyone have ANY idea what the hell is going on.

When both are connected, it works perfectly. When I disconnect the CD ROM, the BIOS can't even auto detect the drive

Check the master and slave jumper settings on the CDROM and the HDD.

    Set BIOS to autodetect.

Remove BIOS battery to clear any previous settings (factory default).

Ya, did that before. Nothing doing.

    BUT,

Tried a different IDE cable, and the HD was autodetected and booted fine. Think it is just a wierd IDE Cable issue.
