    Power switch idea. Good?

I am thinking about running a switch (on the ignition input of my Carnetix unit) with three positions. Off, Always on and ignition on.
Ignition on - As it is now, a 12v line when the ign is on and 0 when it's off.
Always on - A feed from the 12v power so you can have the computer on without the engine.

The main reason for this is that I have a webcam and I thought it might be useful if I park somewhere where I'm worried about some inconsiderate **** hitting my car and driving away I can leave the computer recording.

    Is this a workable idea?

    Yes, it'll work just fine.

I intend to have a switch on my ACC line to act as a valet switch of sorts.
If you think about it, you can't have teh ACC line always on, because it's always going to be controlled by the vehicle ignition.

You could create a circuit that could switch the state using a relay, I'm certain...

I was thinking of running the 'always on' power from the battery, won't that work?

It would. The switch would be changing the state of that power line (on or off), thereby initiating startup/shutdown of the PC through the shutdown controller.
