    Post 40x4 LCD vs. VFD

Need some help here. I just ordered a 40x4 LCD for $20 this morning. Today, I was looking at someone's VFD and it looked different (and kinda cooler). Is there a big difference between these two things? Can someone list the main differences? Thanks...

Also, since this lcd (Seiko L4034 4X40 LED Backlight LCD - with HD44780 Controller Chip) has a controller on it already, would all I have to do is play "connect the wires" to get it working? Or is there some complicated things to do? Thanks for any help....

As Brian (BGreet) said, I bought it from eio.com. Only $20 and free shipping. Can't beat that with a stick...

With VFDs, the characters are lit, whereas, with LCDs, the characters just turn dark and require backlighting or a fair amount of ambient light to be seen. As a result, VFDs have a neat sort of glowy look to them. However, they tend to be more expensive (though there was a guy on eBay selling 4*20s for <$30) and harder to find. Any LCD or VFD you buy for this should have a controller built in--don't buy it otherwise.

The inverted deal looks really nice.
(for those of us that can't afford a VFD)

There are some schematics around to hook them up. It isn't hard, just a few resistors and some wire to hook it to the parallel port.

Of course triple check your work before putting power on.

LCD's are made up to 40x4 and possibly larger. From what I can tell, VFD's only go up to 4x20 unless it's custom (very pricey).

It's not too difficult to invert an LCD, either. Search around and you'll find posts about it. For $20, versus ~$80 for a smaller VFD, it's worth it.

Anyone know if 40x4 VFD's are available yet?
