    Post Mobile internet

The Boston Globe had an article today about mobile internet access, via CPPD or whatever that acronym is. It sounds like the prices have come *way* down, and you can get a modem for $100 and unlimited local service for like $25 a month (they said Mobile IP from verizon was the cheapest)

Has anyone looked into anything like this?

And, on a related note, if I wanted to do this, it looks like I would need a PC card slot. There seem to be a bunch of PCI-PC card bridges, but if my computer is in the trunk of my car I am concerned that the reception would be terrible, especially if the cards don't have an antenna port for me to attach an antenna to.

Does anyone know of a USB-PC card or firewire-PC Card bridge? Or maybe the solution is to get PCI ribbon cables and run the card outside the case or something. Ideas?

Assuming that the wireless equipment is some cousin of 802.11b equipment, you can most likely hookup an antenna. There are plans around the web for building antennae that boost 802's range from about 500-1000 feet to over a mile. Find out exactly what kind of hardware verizon is offering.

I'm guessing that you mean CDPD. Cellular Digital Packet Data has been around for quite some time now, and its quite slow at its best (19.2kbps). Its in not related to 802.11, and is really essentially a cell phone.

Yeah, its not broadband if thats what you were looking for.

The only saving grace is that it is constantly on, whereas my wireless internet uses my cellphone minutes, and can get real expensive real quick if I dont watch my time.

oh yeah, and you almost have to be stationary--everytime my phone switches towers I get kicked.

Yeah - no relation from cppd to 802.11b

most of the cppd cards have an antenna port.

Here is a usb to pcmcia adapter http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.asp?EDC=223235

I use a Sprint PCS Samsung headset and serial data cable for my rig - it runs at 14.4
