    DDR PC2100 memory wont work?

Man im confused. I have (4) 512 meg chips that i wanted to place in my PC. They state they are PC2100U, 512mb, ddr, 266, CL2, ECC. I have no idea what any of this means.

Now I have 2 chips in my Dell PC right now. Both 256. There is no marking on them besides the manufacturer but when i pulled them out and physically looked at them, they were identical. The 512 chips fit in no problem but will not post. I get the 4 beeps from a dell motherboard. I tried reducing the chips to 2, then to 1, and then changing them to see if i had a bad chip. All of which had the same output.

Basically i could use an explanation of what chips my Dell Dimension 4600 should use and why these wont work. What the hell am i gonna do with these chips now?

Plug in your make/model and it will give you Crucial part numbers and specifications for your setup.

It would seem that you would want PC2700 (or faster) for optimal performance. The PC2100 might work, but I'd go with the better-performing RAM if at all possible... Better safe than sorry...
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

Most consumer Computers don't support ECC.
ECC and Buffered RAM are usually only used on Server Racks.

ECC is used to "correct errors" that happen when moving info in and out of RAM. In servers, errors can cause a system crash and a company may lose $$$ shutting down and restart the server. Buffered RAM hold info that is used alot to save time fetching it.

usually when you have ECC, you have Buffered. Same thing with nonECC, you get unbuffered, which personal computers use.
