comp won't boot with USB to IDE dvd rom plugged in

i just switched my dvd rom from IDE cable to USB-IDE adapter. the rom works fine with the adapter once in windows. however, i cannot boot with the rom plugged in. if the rom is plugged in via USB adapter when i attempt to boot, the comp will just hang on the VIA screen....then if i unplug the rom, it will continue to boot normally within 5 seconds. then if i plug it back in after it resumes the boot, the drive works fine. any ideas on what could be causing this? i tried google and searched here and only found one other person with the same problem, but no solution.

Enter the BIOS setup and make certain that USB boot is disabled and that USB is not one of the options in your boot order.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

I have a system with a VIA motherboard, and it hangs on BIOS if I have my Sony DVD burner hooked up (USB). I haven't tried what Darque suggested, but I know the only way I can boot is unplug it.

Sounds like a glitch in VIA boards..

What else is plugged into your root hub? I had a similar problem with my m10k (this was a few years ago, and I'm strugling to remember the remedy), and I think it didn't like the drain I was putting on the root usb hub, so I switched a few of the high draw devices to a external powered hub, I think. I can't really remember, all I remember is i had similar problems, and then I fixed it, which isn't that helpful.
