Have you tried using your dvd rom attached directly to the USB port on your laptop instead of the hub?
Ok.. I´ve gotten all my usb devices up and running and I´ve used devcon a little bit to have some usb devices reenabled so everthing works all the time even after hibernation, standby etc...
Well currently I have this setup on my desk
Laptop connected to>
Usb2.0 powered hub connected to>
USB BLUETOOTH ADAPTER
USB TOUCHSCREEN CONTROLLER
USB EXTERNAL DVD (1usb for data and one for power
all devices seems to work properly and all drivers installed correctly
BUT - When I watch a dvd movie I see radom frame rate drop and after about 1-2minutes of playback the computer freezes and there is nothing I can do but do a cold reboot. This occurs no matter what dvd I watch.
So.. I guess it´s a usb-bandwith problem.. but why? I dont use any other device activly... no bluetooth device is connected, I dont use the mouse, I dont use the touchscreen function...
Could it be some way that I can set the dvd-player to work in high priority mode in some way to fix this?
Could I maybe do (with cable adapters in some way) make 2 hub ports recieve data from the dvd simultaneously? (guess not...?)
anyway, the usb needs power from one usb and data from the other so I´ve tried both having one to the pcmcia card + one to the free native port
Tried also putting both dvd cables into the cardbus but non works with 100% result. very difficult to even load the drivers when I´m doing it right now...
On my other desktop machine 3.2ghz the unit works perfectly fine without any frame drops...
But moving it to my laptop just causes trouble.. (1.8ghz 512mb ram)
edit: removed all usb devices and just plugged the dvd directly into my pcmcia card usb port. Guess what, computer freezes again... after like 20 seconds of playback, but this time I did not se any frame drop until total freeze.. How can I check what´s wrong?
Ok nevermind, old basic common sense... Changed colour dept back to 16bit and resolution to 800x600 all seems to work fine without frame dropping.
As if it was so easy...
Nope... never works reliable.. either it´s a cpu problem or usb problem. Mostly my dvd doesnt get recognized by windows and if it does I might be able to play a cd for about 1 minute with just plain cd-music. Hmm... isn´t this a little bit weak..
The ONLY active device that is using bandwith on my usb 2.0 area is just this dvd so I cannot see why there should be a bandwith max-out when just using cd´s... I have the hub powered by a wall socket adapter so the power should be enough. Can I test in some way if the device needs some other kind of voltage?
Unplugged all devices from my pc and inserted the dvd´s two usb cables into my two usb 1.0 ports on back of my pc (native)
Everything works fine and the unit seems very stabile and all ok
Plugged in my pcmcia usb 2.0 card (has got 2 usb 2.0-ports) and plugges in the dvd´s cables into this
The dvd doesnt work, windows says that "one of the installed usb units is unrecognized/bad" and the highlighted unit is unknown and one of the occupied usb2 ports
so.... does this card feed less power than the native ones (Í have heard the opposite) or what is it? bad driver?
The pcmcia card is from taiwan and was fairly cheap, don´t know where I can download drivers since there isnt a manufactures name on the package
YES! The dvd drive works. I did Read up on threads about the drive needed all three cables to work so... the unit occupies 3 usb ports (!) Will probably fix this when mounting into car with a single power cable to battery directly.
Port 1 usb data
Port 2 usb power
port 3 usb power (via ps2-connector>usb)
Man this laptop doesnt like my usb adapters taking all the power. The battery icon keeps flashing from time to time even though my external dvd runs from a WALL CHARGED usb hub. The only usb that is connected is
If I add this the computer goes to freeze:
usb card reader
flash memory stick
Anyway power supply seems important as everybody says... but the stupid thing is that I dont get any suggestions like pop up windows or so that there is insufficient power anywhere on the usb chain, it just freezes if it feels like it wants to annoy me
I will probably be using mostly active hubs in the car I guess
