    2002 Audi A4 Project

I've had my A4 stock for 2 years now and after spending some time in cali with a brand new 2007 Mercedes SUV, its time I try to integrate a LCD panel of my own. I'm planning on replacing the stock SymponthyII cd-change/player with an LCD.

At first, I want to be able to do...
    MP3s,Video, and GPS

UPDATED 9/18/06 - Problems to overcome...
    1) Speaker hookup - only my rears will have audio for now. fronts need a seperate amp
    2) LCD placement - the 7" lilliput is not wide enough and is just a little too tight on the height. waitin for double-din to arrive.
    3) LCD power/vga/rca wire placement/routing
    4) CarPuter placement

When it all that works, I'll move onto Sirius XM radio and maybe a LG VX9800 phone integration.
Question: Whats a good tuner to get that I can control via a computer? Im definitely a newb when it comes to XM.

    Software:
Windows XP Pro - stripped for the quickest boot time (currently 35s)
    iGuidance for GPS
    RoadRunner interface with Freedrive
Windows Media Player classic for DVD rips

    Hardware:
    BU-303 USB GPS Receiver - $59
    Lilliput 7" LCD - $250
    Opus 150W power supply - $163
    CarPuter
    MSI ATX AMD-478 motherboard
1.7Ghz Athlon XP - (I'll prolly end up going mobile if I have problems)
    512Mb of RAM
    160Gb ATA hdd
    some cheap video card
DVD Player - yet to be decided
SoundBlaster X-Fi (when everything is done)

Picture of my interior and stock unit that will end up getting replaced (note: not my actual car).

First off, the audio option is cob-job right now, but it will change. basically, since I want to do this the cheapest way possible until I have money, I wired my audio so that just my rears are playing. ill keep it this way until i figure out an amplifier option for the fronts.

for those who dont know, for the stock Audi Symponthy II Headunit (even Bose as well - i believe), the front speakers (as well as its midranges) are amplified by the HU. the rears (as well as their midranges) are powered by a seperate amp in the rear of the car. see image below:

    Image borrowed from Puffanug's thread.

what i did was, jumped the amp's white power-on wire (this is all on the wiring harness behind the HU btw) with the red/blue 12v line. this powered the amp up (i will eventually need a switch for this). then i simply spliced and a RCA-3.5" connection on the Line-Out wires and remembering to connect ground, white wire inbetween the RL + RR wires....and, wolah! my rears play and are powered up right through the amp, sounding just like it did with my HU in.

again, now i have to worry about powering the fronts, but w/e that can wait!

    Defenseman,

I am prety much in the exact same boat as you.

    Here is my planned setup

    Hardware I have
    - Laptop <-- 2nd hand with broken screen
    - Lilliput 7inch (model 619)
    - GPS receiver
    - VagCom cable
    - Bluetooth dongle

    Hardware I need
    - Car2PC audio interface to Car Sterio

    Software I have
    - Road Runner
    - Blue devil skin <- interfaces very nicely with iGuidance
    - IGuidance
    - Winamp
    - Vagcom

    Software I need
    - Bluetooth control over cell phone

    Where I am right now:
    2 problems:
    1) I am trying to find a way to mount the screen in the space curently taken up by the cupholder/ business card holder above the current radio. It will then slide out (non powered), and then flip up (spring loaded)

Current problem is that the screen is too deep if i also include the controller board on the back. But the board and screen are connected by a ribbon cable, that is too short (and very difficult to extend)

    2) The skin is not wokring nicely with the RR software. The image does not fill the whole screen. I am going to have to investigate.

Have you read up on the Car2PC interface dongle? It allows for audio from PC into your stock headunit, and also allows for the car radio to send button commands to the PC. It then controls Winamp.

I will be interested to read about your software mods.

i dont know anything about pop-up/extending LCDs. its hard for me to say. im taking my headunit (HU) out and replacing with with a double-din bracket and the Lilliput LCD itself. im hoping it will fit w/out modification.

ok, for the audio, you should know that the rears are amplified by a rear amp and the fronts are amplified by the headunit. i briefly read about the car2pc adapter i dont think its gunna work -- i simply dont know how it would and plus, its gotta use the headunit which i dont want anymore.

what im doing is buying an adapter (Metra 70-1787) to plug into the line-out (red) harness. the adapter is a male-red connector and outputs to RCA. it also includes the amp power-on connection and a ground. for the fronts, im am going to need a seperate amp. i dont see any other way to the fronts except for mounting/placing the headunit someplace else. ha
