Any kind of disk? ie; dvd-rw/r/+r/+rw ? Or discs with data already on them, or pressed real discs ? Ideally if a disc is blank, and you try to access the drive it will say "Please insert disk".

Have you tried using any burning software, directly selecting the drive and burning some data?

I had this problem with my drive. It does not work if connected to USB HUB. Try to connect directly to the USB port on your computer. If fixed mine problem

where are you connecting the power cable? USB Ports only can draw 500mA and a USB DVD ROM (CD-ROM, DVD-RAM, etc) need about 1A.

You need the usb connection (where data flows) with 500mA, and another source of power, BUT, the other USB port (typically USB connectors has two ports) share the 500mA current, so you should connect it to a PS2 (Keyboard) connector.

yargon has a very good point. My two external dvd burners both have external power sources. Perhaps this is the source of your problems...
