On the
laptop (running
linux) at the time, it was not an option to disable it. I was originally using a USB2 PCI card in the doc and I'd get spurious errors and a bios warning that required me to F1 to proceed to boot.
I switched to a PCMCIA card which avoided the bios error and fixed the sporadic operation, though I'd still get warnings (I can't remember what the content was) about communication errors, though from a functional perspective, it all worked.
Actually thinking about it, I think I tried a different PCMCIA card originally and it did not work, and then swapped it out for the one that did. I soon after got a laptop with usb2 so I'm not sure what the brand is off the top of my head, I'll go dig it up later.
Anyway, it may be worth while to make a live linux cd and see if you can't troubleshoot it.
lsusb would be handy, also the usb devfs and the various logs might give you a clue as to how or why things are being dropped.
