    Question HUD

Last night, I took my Jornada out to the car to see how an LCD (alone) could fare in projecting an image onto the windshield. It didn't do too badly, but I could never get the image to project correctly. I'm wondering how someone like Cadillac projects their infrared video onto the windshield.

Problem 1: Projector issues. With the unit pointing toward the front of the car, the image was flipped horizontally (like looking at it in a mirror)

Solution 1: Write a program to draw each pixel in it's opposite position, giving you the effect of the reversed "ambulance" text on ambulance hoods. This could also be done with a mirror.

Problem 2: HUD screen distortion. The projection seemed to reflect in a few different layers of the windshield, effectively destroying it's sharpness. It looked like double vision, with different layers reflecting different colors. Also, the curvature of the windshield distorted the image.

Solution 2: I thought about taking a flat piece of transparent lexan, and using that as the projection area. That way, there would only be one reflective plane, and it wouldn't distort the image the way the curved windshield would. If placed properly, it *shouldn't* look bad, as it is transparent.

What are your comments on this? Also among my ideas are using a small LCD projector, along with a lexan viewing plane.

    Thanks

I don't know about other LCD's but the 4" from parts-express has a switch that will reverse the horizontal for just this sort of purpose.
    So, that's one problem down.

The reason I didn't do this sort of heads up is because a bright lcd shining out of the windshield like that would probably be cop-bait.

Woah, are you sure it doesn't flip the image VERTICALLY? Usually that switch is for mounting it upside down, rather than reflected.

Actually a character HUD wouldnt be too terribly hard to do. First go find yourself either a large character size VFD or if you want to try it a bunch of 8 bar display units(but then you have to create an interface driver). then install in your dash pointed towards yourslef. Sticka mirror in front of it and aim the image at your windshield. Ive seen it work before. I actually saw a guy inset a small (5 inch or so) CRT in the center of his dash and then worte software to invert the image(no mirrors nescarary).

Quoting myself, "I'm wondering how someone like Cadillac projects their infrared video onto the windshield." This would strictly have to be an LCD, because character VFD and LED simply can't output video (from a raytheon IR camera). I might add that other uses could include GPS navigation and control of an onboard computer. Any other ideas?

TheEFFecT: I was just interjecting intot he discussion the idea for a character HUD. Where in my post did I say anything about using a VFD to project an image form a IR camera?

There is a HUD you can buy for your car that will display your speed RPMs ect, anyway you need a "special" tape on your windshield so the thing will work right (comes with the unit), but maybe thats what you are missing.

kane2g is right about the windshield. I have the HUD to show mph and what not. Is it tape or the actual glass though? I've heard that if my windshield breaks, I need to buy the HUD type rather than any old one.

I'm also interested in something like this. It would be the safest way to control your tunes while driving (since you don't take your eyes off the road)

Maybe a mfg would make one that would do exactly what you want if there was enough interest? group purchase?

Maybe someone already does. I don't really know. Something to really look into.
