Cool Some basic questions

I have some basic questions. I was planning on using an older 166 mhz cpu and mother board. Here are some q's I got.

1) What size case will be good, the smaller the better, but it needs to fit a HD, Sound Card.

2) The display? What are different ways for the display? Lets say I was using some sort of LCD screen. How does the LCD screen connect to the computer (the computers Vcard?).

Also any other advice or tips for making a small desktop style system would be great.

Thanks, Frank.

For the case, i had a mid tower case laying around. I broke out the hacksaw and cut it down. Guess that makes me a true hacker (he, he, ... not that funny).

As for the display, i dont have one, but im almost positive they hook up thru the com ports.

A mini tower would work for what you want. Although, I found an old Compaq case at work that I use that is TINY. Its about 2 inches tall, Video, Sound, and Network cards fit perfect due to an ISA Riser card which lets me mount my cards horizontally. Check it HERE. For the LCD, it depends on what kind you want. If you want like a 20x4 char, most fit in the parallel port. If you want like a 6 inch, you are going to have to get a Video card with C-Video out capabilities.

Any idea where I can pick up a ISA riser card? I have an old Gateway case (looks similar to yours), but the riser card is made specifically for the motherboard that came with it and can't be plugged in a normal isa slot. I found one from Twin Industries, but they want $70 for it!

Well, the riser card was already in the case when I picked it up.. Try a local computer store would be my best answer.

Here is a link to someone selling a small case on Ebay and it includes a riser card for only 30 bucks. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI...item=285156173
The auction is about to end but he's been selling them for a couple of weeks so it should be back up soon. It's a hell of alot cheaper then the 70 bucks for the riser alone that you found and you get a brand new case. Good deal. I would get one myself if I could find a motherboard(preferably an all-in-one)that I knew fit in this case. If anyone can suggest a half size all-in-one(or not) motherboard to fit this case and where to buy it on the net I would really appreciate it.

Hope this helps!
