    Tesla?

Just for entertainment purposes, really, I'm sure everyone knows about that new Tesla Car (http://www.teslamotors.com), but what if one were to put a carputer in that bad boy? The main thing I'd be worried about is if the thing doesn't recharge quick enough, you'll just drain your entire car and be sitting on the road like a really really rich fool. Also, would it be possible to rig up a minimal power draw anti-theft system? This thing, for all it's bells and whistles, doesn't seem to have any way to prevent someone from bashing up your ride.
Yes, that really IS my car, sad, though it may be, I'm putting a computer in it.

    i read the site..

8000$ out of state delivery charge? what the hell

you are pretty much stuck with another exotic (but really a british pos as some of you know their track record! ie rover, mini, range rover etc) snobby machine that can only be serviced by the dealer... and if there isn't a dealer nearby, well you can't even buy one.

range of 220 miles or so is pathetic because you have to consider that in this range your "go home distance" is also factored in. so in reality, your actual range is a mere 100ish miles. great for going to work and back but not for much else.

also the size.. well small people only.

i'll pass. i like the concept but anything smaller than a camry and a dealer 30 miles away won't get my $$.

Are you sure you read the site? First off, it's a 250 Mile Range...comparable to that of most conventional internal combustion engine cars. Second, this is direct from the website
And should you need to charge on the road, packed away in the trunk is an optional mobile-charging kit that lets you charge from standard electrical outlets while away from home.
So lets see, your out on a roadtrip or something, spend the night at a motel, charge your car in the parking lot, or, even if you just make a quick rest stop at a diner or something, offer to give the manager a quick spin around the block or $10 if he lets your charge your car while your eating.

I'll concede the Service problems if anything should ever go wrong on the car, that's a granted, as well as the 8k out of state delivery charge. But since the company is relatively small, you might be able to work a pick-up out with them...Vacation in California for a few days.... $1k tops for plane, hotel, etc, and then drive the thing back. Also, if you can afford a car that costs this much, you can easily either (a) afford the 8k charge, or (b) afford to take a week or two off work to pick this thing up yourself.

It's a roadster, of course it'll be small. Hopefully they will release some new models in the future.

BUT! mini-rant aside, I'm wondering what, for a proof of concept, I guess, type of computer this thing can handle, and if it would be possible to add a theft deterent device to it. Just to find out what the purely ideal setup would be for something like this.

Chances are most of the car is 12volts except for drivetrain. so anytype of carputer would be fine, just less driving time. and anti-theft wise the ign switch is probably still 12volts so at the very least you could still kill ign, or maybe trottle (pedal) or steering wheel. since its all drive by wire.
