Ideally, it needs to be based on a pc but using a custom MB. Tivo already does this running Linux, and it does it well. Tivo hard drives frequently fail, and they just swap out the whole system. It could be done but money needs to be invested in getting the hardware right, which is probably beyond the scope of any individual when the big boys are already in the market.

you would have to GUARANTEE that i could not watch a movie when the car was moving. interesting logic processes that involve interfacing with the vehicle computer to "dis-allow" the running of certain applications while the vehicle is in motion. that involves many hundreds of vehicle computers to design for.
actually, most car audio companies, kenwood, pioneer etc, just expect us to tap into a lead that is triggered when the car is not in motion (i.e. a parking brake ground), no tapping into any car computers

    I know... more detail:

You could have a gps as a standard part of the system, and have it set up so that the LCD only works when the GPS says 0mph.

What's the point of the gps if it isn't running while you are driving?

To me you are supposed to be able to glace over and see that your turn is coming up.

    No no.. i fully understand..
My point is that they are sayin you shouldn't use a gps. (they = people who say/make law that you can't have the screen on)

What I thought would be more ideal, if you are allowed to have a gps but not a video screen, some how rig it so only your gps can be displayed while the car is moving.

I dunno, I just woke up, if it makes sense then cheers, if not then simply ignore me

jsut try to think of all the standards for safety that would have to be guaranteed for this thing to be sold in the US.

Existing LCD systems connect to the handbrake by a single wire to ground. On my Kenwood display this stops me watching TV whilst moving, but I can view the interface for the CD player and tuner, and view the GPS display. This certainly is not complex and can easily be used in any vehicle.

If a system is released that lets you watch movies whilst moving, its not the manufacturer breaking the law, its you for watching the movie whilst driving.

this was in the chicago sun-times this morning: car tv fines

i was ****ed when i saw the headlines, but after reading the article it only applies to screens that recieve broadcast video. i guess that could be expanded to include movies as well, but there is probably no chance that this will expand to include gps and radio interfaces...
