Post Cheap GPS!- Read Now! (Reposting)

    Hi All,
This is off-topic but I wanted to make sure everyone knew! Delorme is currently offering their TripMate GPS unit for the amazingly low price of $50 USD.
    Details at : http://delorme.com/redirect/specialo...5329&code=3341
Out of the box, this GPS can only work with the Delorme software, however, it is relatively easy to hack it to work with all GPS software.
    Details here: http://www.qsl.net/kd4rdb/tripmate.htm

I ordered one of the units, completed the modifications on the above page and am now using it as the reciever for Micrsoft Streets And Trips 2001 which is the ONLY software I have found with good Canadian map support.

Any canadian's reading this who want GPS, this IS the software you want to use. The map detail is infinitely better then anything else I could find.

So its a great time to add cheap GPS to your setup if you are already running a full car PC with some kind of TFT LCD.
    Enjoy!

I checked it out and they want like 20 bux for shipping to Canada!

    That's a little steep.

Hah! Sorry I'm wrong. The shipping to Canada is only $31 bux US.

    What a deal.

Yeah the shipping to canada is pretty steep.
However, I am sure there are plenty of Americans on the board...

I figured even with the shipping it was the cheapest GPS I was going to find.

Whats the difference between this one(first generation) and the new ones that are on the market?? Someone was saying something about a 15sec delay between readings...

I decided just to buy one. Even if the delay is 15 seconds, this is still one sweet deal.

The 15 Second delay is actually a function of Streets and Trips. Not the GPS.
Using other software, the GPS updates probably every second or so.

For some reason, Microsoft choose 15 seconds for Streets and Trips. Its not a function of the GPS though so don't worry!

I will try to add a help section on my website soon at
    http://mp3grandam.dyndns.org

about hacking the gps, and getting it running with Streets and Trips, for those who use it.

There is some confusion caused by reading that other hack page, because his goal was to hook it into some other wierd device, not a standard PC serial port. And I don't believe the 12 volt power modification he did can even work, using a computer serial port because it doesn't provide the needed voltages.

Can't wait to see your help page on this gps unite (considering I just ordered it).

So is there any confirmation that the 12 volt power modification works or not? Would be a pain in the *** to have to continual put in new batteries.
