    High qualtiy USB sound card?

gotta be External cause its a laptop without sound, and yes I did search, that out of the way, whats got a good strong signal, hopefully with RCA outputs, or at least just really good output. looking for a strong s/n ratio and lots of output voltage. going to be connecting to a fully infinity referance amp/speakers setup, so I want it to sound really nice
now if I could just figure out how to put a computer on the SV.....

well, while that seems to meet and exceed my needs, it seems to do so by quite a lot. not that that is a very big problem of course, just, you know, well if they had that in the 2.1 or 4.1 formats for cheeper I would be say yay, and yes I know it could do that itself. anyways. I found this http://www.creative.com/products/pro...&product=10769 and was wondering if anyone had tried it or if it looked decent.
most of the creative products say they are rated at 2Vrms on the outputs, I am wondering if that is 2 volts per output, or per channel, because that would obviously make a big difference, since 2 channels are gonna run off each out put. well, 2 channels will run off one output, only one channel will run off the rear output on my setup. also, if I had, say, that 8channel sound card, could I "bridge" any of them together? say, I set up two or three of the channels putting out the same signal and then use a Ysplitter to combine them together for a more powerfull signal? and would this work for a typical 5-6 channel card as well?

I'd really like to get 4Vrms signal to my amplifier from the sound card. 2Vrms would be ok, but I would prefer higher. I have a rockford HU that puts out 2V and that sounds ok, but I had at one point put an alpine with 4v pre-outs and it sounded so much better. then again, since I intend to keep the rockford as an auxiarly and for colder weather and untill the computer boots up (again using Ysplitter to combine signals) then maybe I should try to match the voltage so the amp gain is the same for either input. if the card really puts out 2Vrms to each channel, then it would be all set up straight as it is, otherwise I would like to combine the channels together if possible.
now if I could just figure out how to put a computer on the SV.....

I like the Audigy 2 NX (external USB 2.0 7.1 Surround). It's got some quirks in a home theater setup, but with my infinity speakers, and clarion amps, it's great. ESPECIALLY at 96khz and DVD's. Night and day difference from 48khz.

It supplants a CMSS fake surround mixing when playing non surround media (MP3's etc), which actually seems to work ok.

That gigaport looks an awful lot like this awful product that I tried once

I heard some funny issues with the pcmcia version of the Audigy 2, can't remember what exactly they were, maybe bus noise? I can't seem to find ANY good USB 2.0 5.1 or higher sound card still available Avoid the turtle beach roadie and the maudio sonica theater (though the sonica is pretty good, still usb 1.1 only, which means no 96khz for more than 2 channel audio). I setup 6 maudio sonica theaters/laptops to run DJ mixing for dew tour events (extreme bmx, freestyle, motocross on espn). I think we used AISO drivers, which helped with almost every problem, I just don't think usb 1.0 is something to keep though.

It's 2v peak to peak per channel, not per output on the audigy 2nx, not sure on the ZS laptop version. I guess you could try to combine the outputs, but not really sure if the unit would like that, since you are changing more than just impedance, you are adding a voltage source! Since the ouput ports are all shared on these devices (except maybe the gigaport), you have unbalanced audio, meaning 2 channels share a ground at least. Could cause some noise issues, but none bad enough for me so far (2 years).

$45 to 95 on eBay. I think they were 129.99 new. I have two, one as a spare. I don't think anyone sells them as new now, but they were sold until recently through circuit city and compusa.

I never thought about firewire, because most of that stuff is MAC only (I have a mac, not in the car though).

This looks REALLY good for car use,

EDIT: Maybe not for 5.1 surround/dvd, but for normal car class audio, 4 channel. I think it can put up to 6dBV per RCA output.

usb dac and an external x-over? (unless your amp(s) have internal x-overs and the passthrough feature so you can daisy chain amps from a stereo set of inputs)
