    way to hide headunit/char LCD

Has anyone ever thought of doin sumfen like this:

make your head unit be able to slide in the dash an extra inch or two, then using servos or sumfen, have a button that will bring it out to the correct placement.
Infront of the headunit have a char LCD in a case (40x4) and on the back of the case have a factory head unit fake face glued on.
Now, when the head unit is right back, the char. lcd can flip over and clip infront of the head unit and leave only the fake factory head unit face showing.

Attached is a pic which will hopefully explain it a bit better!

I always put my fake face-plate on.
It's from an philips radios, over 15 years old..
The thing has only an FM tuner..
So I trashed it, and saw of the front.. glued it back together, and it now looks like a really really old radio.

If one sees that thing they would immediately walk on..

Yes, I'm being paraoid (read the other thread about the possibility that the char.lcd. might get stolen...)
but that just happens when you leave your car for 20 minutes, only 40 meters away, to find out it has completely been robbed when you come back..
Sorry, but because of this 'accident' I became much more carefull

Hell, I even lock my car and take the faceplate off when I want to pay for the gas......
Call me paranoid.. but you'll see with these things.
Leave the face-plate on for one night, or you just forget it, and they will break in....
So this is just routine for me.. going out the car.. take it all with you...

I will also be a bit paranoid when i install my 8.4" touchscreen....i want to install it into my dash and give it the "custom stock look"...but i also want to make it conceal/hide cuz i park in the streets in Brooklyn!!Besides that, my car is also a convertable...any suggestions on how i can hide my screen without removing it...

That idea of making a fake faceplate sounds like a good idea btw....

Maybe a false dash is the way to go!

For those people that have tft displays, why not make a custom console cover?

Say you have a $400 headunit and a 8.4inch display, covering it up by making a fiberglass panel that is molded in such a way that the whole center console is covered, (ie the climate control, the hu, and the tft). and for you spyder i would say that you make yours look completely blank, many newer convertibles are going to the spartan look, form over function.

    that is just my $.02

I'm working on building a removable faceplate setup.. once I'm done I'll post some photos. If I am comfortable with the design and the ammount of work involved I may think about selling a couple.

It'll be about a month to make it.. but it's going to look really nice (in theory).
