2.5" IDE Extension Cable - Needed

    Hello all,

Now I am a newbie and i have searched as much as i can but have failed to find exactly what i am looking for. I do hope that i won't get 'flamed' for posting but i have tried to search for what i need.

Well i have just completed my install and finally got round to moving the tablet pc into the boot as originally intended (has been hidden in my glovebox until now). Well now that it is secured more permanently in the boot (Trunk for you lot over there!) i am experiencing some problems with the HDD due to vibrations and my lowered 'stiffer' suspension.

I like where the Tablet pc is mounted and can rest assured that it wont move around during driving. As the tablet pc has one of those smaller hard drives 2.5" type that slots directly onto the board, i was considering using a 2.5" ide extension lead (2.5" socket to a 2.5" plug) to bring the HDD out of the main unit so i can mount it seperately with some damping but i can't find one. It will also make it real easy to disconnect HDD to enable me to bring it indoors to load on songs, vids and to back up without having to rely on wireless technology which doesn't seem stretch reliably to my parking space.

PS i am really enjoying this site, and those new links of newbies are really great. I have so far done the following:

Rebuilt my dash in aluminium to house two 1din HU
Connected up a tablet PC to 7" motorized touch screen
today - got myself Road Runner a changed the default skin logo to vauxhall!!
Awaiting a laptop convertor to ide (got the usb2 to ide kit)
Got a slim slot type dvd writer combo drive (laptop) awaiting above!
oh and put in an ejecting card reader

Thanks for looking and i hope you can help me out,

    Daniel

My first idea doesn't really work, because I was going to suggest that you convert the 2.5" into 3.5" and then go back to 2.5" but I couldn't find an adapter for that. You could always make one, even though that would be really tedious

If you wanted to mount it further away, and don't mind converting it to usb 2.0: http://glob2000.stores.yahoo.net/usb20toideca.html

Don't know how much help these brackets would be but I found em while searching so I thought I would post em.

I've been looking for the same thing, but I think there is nothing available, I can't find anything anyway, so I'm assuming it would have to be made by me...

I bought 2 adaptors that adapt 2.5"-3.5", then a regular 3.5" ide connecting the two for extension... it plugs right into the drive & the cables, the problem area is at the motherboard itself... you wind up with female against female.... so pins will need to be made that insert into one female, & protrude out enough to also go into the other female... I havn't actually cut these double pins yet & tried it, but it should work.....

please, no sexual jokes about this post

Well like a good newbie, my searching was was made more 'exciting' when i did come accross that CF to IDE converter. I must admit i had considered both of those methods, but life would be far simpler if someone actually made one a 2.5" ide extension lead!! It might be worth trying to solder up a lead myself, but i fear that it might be more hassle than it is worth. The reason i didn't want to go the usb route is because my tablet does not have ps2 sockets and is unable to recognise a keyboard at start up (so i can't get into the bios to change the boot drive :-(

    Cheers so far,

    Daniel

my way needs no soldering at all, it's all plug & play except making the right sized double ended male pins.... this should be as easy as finding the correct size pins... almost anything might work, from a paper clip, to a cut down needle of some sort... I haven't had a chance to actually do it yet, but I'm well over 90% sure it has to work...

I'll try it in the next day or 2 & let you know the results

Cool - cheers - hey, what about the board mounted male sockets, would they not have pins on both sides (one for the HDD) and one to be soldered onto the board. Maybe the board side pins will slot into a female? (could file the plug a bit just incase the pins aren't long enough). When i salvaged a finger print reader from a mouse for my carputer i used staples to 'mate' two female plugs together, but there were only 4 connections to be made.

(I am just checking out your install - not bad ;-) - seriously it is quite something well done!!)

Hadn't considered that - i really must take the tablet out and have a look more closely. I am still awaiting my laptop to ide convertor for my laptop slot optical drive (DVD writer), i plan on getting this set up this week - that will teach me to order from hong kong on ebay - takes ages!!

Just wondered if you have a sponsorship from malboro!! You seem to have masses of boxes lying around - no wonder you had to put those bright lights under your screen to see through all the smoke in your car!!
