ive not tried ti myself but im told that it doesnt quite have the power. which is a shame
im also reliably informed there is a new version wtih a better graphics chipset that might solve the problem
Is a VIA C3 800mhz chip too slow for divx 5? My divx range from 640-720 x 240-400. They are mostly encoded with divx 4 and divx 5 . Will the VIA C3 (as fast as a celeron 500 about) be enough for divx decoding. I will put at least 128mbs ram in the machine

VIA now do a 1ghz chip (link) , but it`s only avalible as a socket 370 chip at the moment. I`m sure they will bring it out on an eden board soon though, i`d wait 4 that. BTW, i do divx 3.11 SBC encodes, and i have a celeron 400mhz that's gonna go in my car, and it playsback my divx's fine. Divx playback depends on more things than just processor speed, a decent graphics card also helps.
The 533 i have (still for sale!) so nearly cuts it. I am reliably informed by VIA themselves that the 800 decodes DVD without problems, and I'm guessing it does Divx. More and more people are using these boards, and they are reasonably good. They have a very good quality tv output, but the graphics card itself is very old (trident - yuk!). Soon there will be a new version with an lcd controller onboard and a better graphics card. Expect this kinda soon.
Mediabox Hardware Project
Current Stage: A complete redesign, although not much happening right now!
Mediabox Software Project
Status: Writing Sync Software (still) and playing around with interface
To do: Far too much!
Do you know when this mobo is goingto be released? What chips its going support, and if its going to cost alot more. For $109 , the C3 800 and eden mobo is great, but ive heaerd it strugles with divx
The motherboard is a newer version of the eden board and therefore only accepts the onboard cpu - it is not upgradable. I don't know more than this - I gained this knowledge in a series of e-mails with Tim Handly at VIA, but he didn't know the release date. Stay tuned though - looks like it should be a good board.

The eden 800 does DVD, vcd, svcd fine but doesn't do divx.
However a C3 800 in a proper mobo might be a lot faster, the 1ghz chip certainly does do divx.
I think a lot of the problem with eden is that its very highly integrated to a full size socket 370 might be ok
I have the eden with the 800mhz c3
I haven't tried to play any divx yet.. but it's marvelous with DVDs
The driver for the display has something about lcd.. I don't know if this is just in preperation for the future or something.. what kind of connection would an LCD use?
Also .. If you get the case from caseoutlet.. beware.. the psu Isn't really cut out for installing stuff from a cdrom to a hard drive.. I had to use a spare psu that i had to have enough power to install my gps software. It is alright with swift installs.. but when i tried0 to install something that requires a few minutes the system suddenly powered down and i had to pull out the power and start all over again.
It does have plenty of power to play DVDs though. Tonight if I have time I'll try using divx and give a full report![]()

mp3car system is currently FUBAR and finances do not allow for a correction of that situation
Real computer hackers use a rotary cutting tool on their motherboard.
This is crazy if u need 1ghz to do divx, something is seriously wrong with the design..... I wouldnt even take it if someone gives it out for free.Originally posted by Fruitloaf

The thing is though a PIII or Athlon at 1 GHz needs one huge *** heatsink to keep it cool, a C3 at 1GHz can be cooled passively. I've not had a proper C3 in a proper C3 mobo, what I'm talking about is Eden which is a HIGHLY integrated mini mobo.
