    Post Ghost in the Machine?

So I don't hear of anyone else with the type of problems i seem to be consistenly having, so Im officially claiming it as a ghost in the machine . All my hardware functions perfectly sitting at my workbench, but the moment I put it in the car, snafu's galore happen, and never the same thing at the same place. Ive tried different OS's, been through five power inveters, upgraded my psu from 145W to 200W, and obsesivly run scan disk (no bad sectors at all), all without a resolution of the system errors/lock ups. Any one have any good ideas on why my system will crash/lock up when the car is sitting still with the same hardware I use indoors? Im currently using a 360W power inverter wired to the battery, with a surge protector between it and the computer.

WEll, I wouldn't go as far as that,
but yes, it could be due to cheap power supplies.

    Cool

Sounds like a power problem. Bad inverters, cheap/bad power supplies, bad grounds, etc.

Heat issues also cause a similar "ghost in the machine" affect. Do you have it mounted somewhere without much ventilation? Do you have an adequate working heatsink and fan? Did you use thermal grease between the heatsink and CPU?

I definitely think the culprit is the power supply/inverter setup.
Inverters don't "like" those filters at the input of PCs power supplies.
If it ain't broken, open it to see what makes it "tick".

Its about 30F in Chicago at the moment, so I dont think heat is an issue. I wouldn't consider really either of the power supplies cheap, and ive, as i said, tried like 5 different brands of power inverters, but I dont see what else is left to try. Does anyone make a MicroATX sized dc>dc psu? Ive only come across home brewed ones, at, and full sized atx.

I think arise *might* make one.... I seem to recall seeing something on the web site... but it could have been a laptop supply.

    Annyway-
I concurr, Except its the blood of a virgin.

I had a lot of issues / strange things going on when I used an inverter.... the thing kept booting into safe mode, redecting hardware for no reason.... wiered stuff.

I would strongly urge you to get a DC-DC supply. but check the following :

Be sure to attach the negative lead to the inverter allong with a lead coming off the case of the computer (ground) all to the same spot....

I caution you though... in some extreem cases that might short out the computer PSU, if so... that *was* the cause of the problem , and you should get a new psu.

I found when I checked the ground potential across my case ground and inverter I got about 22 volts.... that was bad

ACtually, I overlooked the obvious cause, its not a ghost, its gremlins that live in my car But seriously, i will try grounding my case. Ive been meaning to do that for some time now, and it always slips by the wayside. ill also break out the multimeter and see what happens. also going to actually take a look at the mbm5 logs to see if any of the rails dip right before it dies.
