it's possible, but your ram drive would be erased every time the computer is shut down. I suppose you could have a key in the autoexec.bat or something that would transfer system files from a HDD to a Ramdrive during boot up, which would increase boot speed.

Ram drives usually aren't meant for permanent storage.

No it would work. They did this on the Screen Savers a few months ago. They installed Half Life on a portion of the system's RAM. Damn! It literally loaded in a second.

They had to get some program to do this, obviously, but it's possible. The only real problem is that you may need more RAM to do this. And the more RAM you have, the longer it takes Windows.

The problem isn't so much getting the stuff in the ram, the problem is making it stay there.

RAM is volitile.. when you power down the data is lost.

yes that would work for loading programs, but you can't boot windows from a ram drive because as soon as you turned off your computer it would erase windows from ram and you would have to copy it back to ram before booting again (which would defeat the purpose). They have some ide ram drives that require power at all times to keep the data on them, but they cost WAY too much money.

    What about compact flash ?
I've heard that compact flash could be connected as IDE device -
32 Megs would be ok for small OS like MSdos or some little linux ?
and possibly 128 or 256 for win98lite ? I don't know the speed of Compact flash but I think this could be a solution ?

My USB smartmedia setup is pretty damn fast..

it would be a feasible solution I think if it's faster. It certainly requires less power.

A rom board would be nice

the downfall of smart media is its lifespan tho. i don't remember the exact numbers, but its got a limit to how many write/erase cycles it can perform before it wears out. so dos, or linux in a read only mode could both work well.

How about storing a hd image on a cf card and then imaging it on the ram drive? Here something i want to try. Booting to dos from the cf, then run a .bat file to create the ram disk, the loading the stored image into the ramdrive.
