    Setting Slot Load DVD/CD Drives to Slave

    Greetings;

    I ordered a DVD/CD slot loading drive and it just got delivered yesterday from Centrix.

    Link: Pioneer DVR-K05

    Hook it up and all goes to hell... turns out that the drive is set to master internally which conflicts with my HD.

    Now I have heard of this happening with some panasonic drives and that was one of the deciding factors for choosing the Pioneer drive... anyway, I'm not *****ing about that (even though Centrix sells another Pioneer drive that says explicitly that it's set to Master)... okay fine I am *****ing a little.

    Anyway, I've been searching around trying to find a solution and may have stumbled across something that will work.

    http://www.cubeowner.com/forums/index.php

    This site explains that if pin 28 is cut on the slim to IDE adapter then the IDE bus will assume that the drive is set to slave even though it is set internally to master. Problem is that its an Apple/MAC site.

    What I want to know is... has anyone tried this? and basically whether or not this is platform dependent? I'll probably try this out myself unless someone can say absolutly that this won't work with a PC.

    If/when I sttempt this I'll be sure to post the results to save anyone else some time/grief. I know that these boards are inexpensive, but shipping to Canada costs as much if not more than the item itself.

    Do you not have a separate IDE connector on your motherboard?

    Other things to try would be to put a USB/IDE adaptor on in and plug it in to a USB connector on your PC or directly connect it to your motherboard?

    One thing to be aware of is that putting a slow device (like a DVD) and a fast one (like a HD) on the same IDE channel can slow the fast drive down quite a bit.

    Cheers

    Adam.
