laptop basics

Okay I've got a laptop that I want to use as my mp3 player/car pc. Can I not just "extend" the display to reach into the dash and do the same with the keyboard somehow, so that both are "remote" from the laptop itself (within a reasonable distance)?

And, if that's the case, how do I do that? I've already got the SOB apart but I don't know how to extend the ribbon cables that connect both to their controller boards.

I'm fairly experienced with some aspects of hardware, but not enough to know how to approach this. Can someone point me in the right direction and maybe even give me some detailed instructions? Thanks, in advance guys...

as for some actual help...
i dont know, ive never done anything with a laptop. i assume it can be done, but length is probably an issue due to vehicle electrical noise.
