My maxtor 20gb hard drive wont spin up when the outside temp is less than 40 degrees F. Does anyone else have this problem? I checked out the specs on most of the big name drives and most have operating temps listed at 5 to 55 degrees C, which I think 5 degrees C is around 40 degrees F. Are there any hard drives that can operate at lower temps?

Maybe laptop hard drives work better in cold temps. I have a Neo 35 mp3 player that only uses a regular drive for a desk top computer. I also have tried a western digital hard drive and it did the same thing. Right now I have a heater that plugs into the cigerette lighter to warm it up. After it warms up it works fine.
i dont know if its my drives, but i have horible stability/booting problems when its cold out (18F this morning in chicago). ive got an old 2gb segate medalist and a 60gb wd.
Hmmm...I did not have any cold related problems with either desktop drives or my current laptop drive. Are you sure it's not a power supply issue?
I'm not surprised - After all, read the manufacturer's operating temp specs. Usualy it's a moderate temperature range around 50deg-110deg F (Just looked it up on WD's site: Their drives operate from 41-131 deg F)

Anything higher or lower will result in safeguard shutdown. Interestingly enough though, it can take 65G of shock for 2ms while operating... that's pretty resiliant!
It seems like something is strange with all those operating temps. I suspect they only test from 5 to 55 C, cause almost every HD out there claims that is their operating temp. Probably many of them work at higher and or lower temps.
