    E46 CarPC with Original HU

    Hi,

after spending some weeks by reading posts, I would like to share my experience with my BMW E46.
In fact, I have installed a Compaq 800MHz Pentium CarPC with additional devices such GPS mouse, Terratec TV/Radio PCI card, 30GB Hard Drive for OS, 100GB HDfor Musics and Videos, 7" Xenarc LCD Monitor, Roadrunner, Navigon, etc.

The difference with others CarPC Installation based, is that I have kept the original HU from BMW. The idea behind is to still have a very good FM reception, to fed the sound into the K7 Circuit (not with K7 Adaptor) in order to have better sound quality, to be able to habe music (radio) when the CarPC is defekt or whatever the problem.

For this, it is necessary to cut the touch panel of the HU in order to get it in the same place of the Ash unit. The connection between the base HU and the touch panel is made through an 15-20cm Flat Cable.

It is of course necessary to cut the new Clima + Ash unit in order to remove the Ash unit and to place the modified touch panel HU's.

The Head Unit has to be cut in order to be able to place the Xenarc Monitor. The pcb circuits of the Xenarc have to be placed on the horizontal way, the monitor on the vertical way (of course).

See pictures below, they speak by themselves.

    Beautiful work!!

That's probably the best install job on an e46 carputer that I've seen to date. I had one in my e46 as well, but I ended up taking it out due to the complications that you were able to avoid.

Can you control the volume of the pc through the HU? If so....that's the perfect install. I also like how you mounted the pc to the hu bracket.

    Hi,

    thanks for the compliment!

yes, I control the volume through the HU, that was the goal as well.
On the past I had a Archos mp3 player internally connected to the
HU (directly sold on the IC). I was able to control the sound through
the HU and was perfect, no additional noise. But the Archos was
connected with an audio cable coming from the box. That was borrowing..

Then I decided to install a CarPC, with mp3 player anf GPS function, and
this in order to minimise flying cable... I mean without cable at all on the
    driver compartiment :-)

Whatever, th only lost I have is the Ash and Sun Glasses compartiment,
that"s all! If you have a CD player with CD Changer capabilities... it will be a little bit more difficult... you will need surely additional HW in order to emulate the CD Changer.

That's the reason why I decided to buy a BMW Business with better Amplifier
and sound quality as the previous one.

I will do pictures of the CarPC, which is installed on the bagage room. The cables are placed all over the car on the left side, untill the bagage room.
It was not complicated. You do not need to remove chairs...

For the audio, you will surely need to use a loop ground isolator in order to
separate ground path, else, the return path of the CarPC supply will also
use the audio path... and then noises. It cost about 30euros.

    Bye!

    Samour.

How did you mount the extenal audio connection

    Great job.

I would like to use the same casette HU for this.
You say you soldered the external audio directly to an IC.
Can you specify this a bit more where to solder. (I would like to do the same thing)

How do you select the external audio source on the HU ?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Sorry to answer so late. I was a long time away fron the forum.
For the IC, it is not complicated to locate it. You have only to follow the wires who are going from the analog head of the K7 player until the IC. See wich IC ist it, download the Datascheet and locate the analog Output part of the IC. Here, you can removes the two pins and sold directly the Audio Cable on it with an appropriate ground pin. That is all!
I do not have pictures of it, but if one day I need to open the HU, I will do it.

To hear the sound of the CarPC, you only need to select "Tape" on the HU.

    Good Luck!

    SAmour.

    Hello Samour,

Thanks for your reply, but I figured it out. (after dismantling the HU, then it was quite easy to locate the pre-amplifier IC) (and I also took some pictures)

Do you have any problem with weak radio signal ?
(after I did this install, then the HU sometimes loses the radio channel.. (like if the signal gets too low, and then it seeks for another frequency).

I was thinking about maybe putting a plate of metal on the front of the HU (where the front-panel, previously where mounted), so any noise from the monitor, wll be blocked out.)

    Best regards

    Jack

If you guys have pictures so I can see before I open it up that would be ideal. Thanks alot.

Is there any issues with having to use a faux tape for the tape deck so it wont confuse the signals? any other useful information would be appreciated. I am installing my carputer in my e39 m5. Thanks.

    Hi Jack,
yes you right. The Monitor ist generating radio noises and those are quite present with weak radio channels. I have alreday tried to isolate the Radio but it doesn't bring anything.. I think that the antenna ist capting those radiated emissions.
The idea will be to isolate the boards of the monitors with Metal Plate... but how?
There is not too much place available..

Or to move the HU on the "baggage room".
Untill now I'm only hearing strong radio channel.

    Good Luck!

    Samour.

I took some pictures with my mobile phone, unfortunately i didn't check the picture quality, before I installed the unit in the car.

In my unit, then the tape audio channel (the one I welded my wires to) would only turn on, when the switch for tape-present where activated and some other switch in the tape unit also needed to be activated (can remember what function it had, but think it was for detecting the tape band was present and streched out).
So I welded the wires for these 2 switches together in the connector for the tape unit. (I didn't want to keep the tape unit anyway, so I could just damage the connector and weld inside it)

But if you want to keep the tape unit (and also use it), then I geuss it could generate some glitches, when you insert/pull-out a tape, which might could damage your speaker system, if you force the switch signals high by weldning the wires together.
You could use a dummy tape instead, when you want to use the external audio input (Remove the tape-band, so it won't generate noise on the tape heads. And block out the the hole, where the sensor that touches the tape-band is, so it thinks a band is present and strecthed out)
