HELP - resume issue - HDD broken?

maybe someone had the same issue before.
My carpc is set to hibernate when I turn the ignition off. It resumes from HDD when the ignition is back on. I just set it like that a few days ago (regular shutdown before). SO far this worked without a hitch. (long and short periods of turn off)

Today in the morning it resumed normally. Then I was driving for 2 hours, turned the car off and came back about 2 hours later. The pc turned on, bios screen comes up, detects the HDD etc, and when it's supposed to resume, I only get a black screen (let it run for up to 10 minutes). ctrl+alt+del didn't work, F8 didn't work, nothing works. I can't get windows to start normally, as I can't do anything. I did hear the HDD spin up at least once.

Now the question is, could the HDD be busted (I don't have a HDD LED)?
could it be that condensation came into the HDD and fried it? the car was heated to 24c / 74f. Outside it was freezing.
Or could it just be windwos f*ing up? And how do I get it to resume/reboot normally?

    My setup:
    Jetway 1Ghz
256 MB Ram (so not the 2 GB resumeissue)
    40 gig 3.5" HDD
    M1-ATX DC-DC converter
    n-lited Windows XP SP2
    Centrafuse with navigation
    dvd, 7 inch sreen,GPS....

    thanks for the help

hm, kinda the last thing I wish to do. I didn't do a backup yet, as there was still some stuff I wanted to fix before I do a backup. And I don't want to reinstall from scratch.

    Turn it off completely.

    Un-plug if necessary.

    It could be anything...

I honestly dont think its the HDD. Try to run a repair, sounds TO ME, like windows decided to throw up on itself. Go off a boot disk or go into safe mode, see what happens.

thanks for all the suggestions. It seems XP didn't like the boot sector anymore, and I couldn't repair it (my fault). So I did a reformat and reinstall. Which in the end was good, because I got the system cleaner, changed my partitions around etc.
I also now did a DVD-backup, after I spent the 3 hours to install everything.
