    com ports

    Hi,

Im using a usb gps aerial, and a usb ibus adaptor (rolf reseller), everything works fine... i have forced the com ports for both using the device manager and manually selecting port 1 for the gps, and port 2 for the ibus adaptor.

Even through when I force the change they are marked as 'in use' by windows, they still work fine.

When the machine reboots, all the ports are lost again, and i have to set them all over again .

Ive heard xport can help the the gps aerial, but is there a way to make sure windows doesnt overwrite the settings? (Windows xp pro, 2nd edtion)

When the computer hibernates/resumes there are no issues, its only when rebooting.

What do you guys currently do?

Why are you forcing them to use port 1 & 2 ?

it allocated coms ports like 13/14, which are out of range of programs like map monkey, but they are sometimes random, and can never be predicted, i always have to check what they are before loading the programs...pain in the ars#

Are you using a USB hub I believe that can cause the randomness.

I agree with Laidback, this is what happens with my GPS, when connected to the hub it randomly gets a COM port number, when connected directly to my pc, it always has the same COM port number.

Think ive solved it now, freedrive lets you pick any com port, and windows seems to stick to it, as long as i dont manually change it, so i set my gps to whatever windows alloacted its port to, and ive had about 15 restarts, on different days, and it works fine!
