    Unhappy Hard Drive Problem

Hi everyone! I recently attempted to upgrade the hard drive in my truck PC to a Western Digital Caviar SE 320GB drive (upgrading from an old Hitachi 30GB laptop drive). Here's the link to the new drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144392
I initially hooked up both drives, made an identical-sized partition, and ran DriveImage XML to copy the contents of my old HD to the new one. It said that the volume couldn't be locked, so I built a BartPE disc with a DriveImage XML plugin and it seemed to copy everything just fine. The problem is that the PC won't boot to the new HD now. I even tried wiping out the data that I copied and tried to do a fresh install on the new drive, but it keeps giving me an error in the BIOS screen, something like "disk boot failure, instert system disk and press enter". Another really weird thing that it's doing, is if I have the BIOS set to boot from CD first, then the hard drive, it will check the CD drive, but then the BIOS will lock up and display a couple randomly colored blocks in the BIOS screen with random characters in them. I can plug in my old HD and everything is fine. Is my hard drive defective? Or do you guys think its a motherboard issue? Also, I'm wondering if the BIOS weirdness has anything to do with the temperatures outside. I only have time to work on this at night, so the temperatures outside are usually near or below freezing. I did see the hardware monitor screen say something like "CPU Temp -3 C/104 F" one time...that just doesn't make sense...

If it skips booting from cd then how did you get BartPE to run? It really sounds like something simple like you haven't set the drive jumpers properly. Incidentally I have had the same problem with driveimage and the disk not booting properly, everytime I used it I have to correct disk errors with partition magic for it to work. I managed to get Ghost working with BartPE and never had a problem since.

It boots from the CD just fine, it's just when there's no CD in the drive, it finishes checking the CD drive and then locks up when it tries to boot from the HD. I wasn't so sure that DriveImage was working properly, but I still can't understand why it still won't boot properly even after reformatting and trying to do a fresh install. I'm thinking about robbing the 250GB drive out of my external HD as a test to find out if the 320 is really the culprit...

Anyone have any idea what might be going on here? I'm running out of time since I think I have to RMA the drive within 30 days of receiving it if it really is defective...

Have you tried it with another drive yet?

the problem is with bootsector of new drive, you copied just the partition contents, but bootsector has nothing to do with it. You need to install bootsector and in it mark your partition as active, and then it'll eventually boot.

Here's quick info about booting process:

    1. BIOS from MB discovers devices, then loads boot sector from default device.
    2. BIOS runs bootsector that reads disk structure (partition info), and reads bootsector from active partition
    3. partition bootsector loads OS

this mainly applies to mswindows, step 3 can be skipped with some alternative system loaders (LILO, GRUB) that can be installed in drive bootsector, and boot system directly in step 2

see if you can install a fresh os install on the new drive. that will narrow down the problem.

if that wont work then its likely: the new drive isnt compatable with your bios, its broke or its not setup/plugged in right.

if that does work, then you know you dont have and drive problems, but that the ghosted os is causing you problems.
