    Indash slimline DVD pre-installation questions

    Hey all,

I bought this slimline DVD ROM/CD-R drive on eBay (note the price...that includes shipping!).

Anyway, I am planning to mount it in my dash, under my screen, but my computer is in the trunk. So, I'm planning to use either this external case/USB 2.0 adapter or this one with a 15 ft. USB A-B cable to connect it to the computer.

My understanding is that the USB bus alone should be sufficient to power the drive when reading CDs/DVDs, but that I would need additional external power to be able to burn CDRs.

Does anyone have any experience doing this? Are there any pitfalls to watch out for, such as the length of the cable?

if the dvd drive is the only thing connected to that usb root hub, then you won't need another wire for power.

But if other self-powered things are plugged in, then you need to feed the drive +5v. Sometimes they have a power-USB/PS2 connector along with the other data-USB connector. So if you have another root usb hub with nothing attached, then you can plug the power-usb into it. Since most of us don't have PS2 devices installed on the car pc, you can usually siphon power off of that port.

It might very well work with no extra power, but it might not be as reliable. My slimdrive gets read/write errors without the power connected because I also have gps, bluetooth, wifi, and a rf keyboard plugged into the same root. I siphon from the PS2 port when the drive is in the car.

Cool. Thanks for the reply. I wondered by there was a PS2-USB adapter in the photos...

My root USB ports are pretty loaded (GPS puck, powermate, modded joystick base the powermate sits on, wireless mouse transceiver). However, I'll be installing the drive at the same time as a DS-ATX, so I should have plenty of 5V+ power to spare. Since USB power is just 5V+ power (there isn't a seperate USB bus power regulator as far as I know), do you see any problem with supplying the power from the DS-ATX 5V+ line?

Supplying it from you psu's 5v+ (red) line is the way to do it. Just make sure you get the polarity correct!
