    Post Screw Headunit, Get Amp

I was thinking, why not just trash my headunit and get an amp? All my headunit does is sit there and amplify the computer's output. Now, that valueable space in the dash being taken up by the headunit, I was thinking of sticking one of Arby's LCDs in there. (if I can ever get the dimension from him) What I would do then would be to just take the output from the computer to an amp then to the speakers. Make sense?

Here's an amplifier I'm looking at: Alpine 4 Channel
I currently have a pair of 5-1/2" 55 watt JBLs in the front, and a pair of stock in the back.

    Hey Ashlawn,
You might want to put some kind of volume control in between your computer and your amps. Like an EQ/line driver. This would amplify the signal coming from your computer to 4 volts + giving you better sound and most EQ's have a master volume control. I'm doing something similar to you. I have a Sony XES-P1 in between my carputer and amps. The XES-P1 is just a preamp for volume control and audio shaping. works very well.

    The LCD's are 7.5" x 2"

the board is just a tad wider than a normal DIN slot. If you've got room to the side on the inside, you should be able to fit it.

Did you try to e-mail me to get the size of the lcd? I don't remember seeing anything from you

Sorry, Arby. I did try emailing you last night. Something got messed at my ISP so they apparently reset all the password for the accounts. 10,000+ people calling to one phone line does sit well. O_o I have my new password and I'll be able to use my email now, (especially considering its what I used on your register site.)

Okay, I think I understand what your saying. Now, I have volume control on the computer itself. What I don't get is upping it to 4 volts and having another master volume control. (Also, I can't find the XES-P1 anywhere. Have a Link? Most of the EQs I found where in the hundreds of dollars.)

upping it to 4 volts will drop your noise floor alot I highly recommend 4 volts minimum 6+ but that is some very high end stuff

If your carputer and amps are in the trunk don't use an in dash EQ/line booster, you still have the lower vlotage signals from the computer to the dash to pick up noise and then get boosted by the dash unit,
As long as you use good cables, keep away from vehicle wiring(fuel pumps are very noisy), and are comfortable with the carputer volume control you should be fine and most brands of amps can be adjusted to reach max volume w/ 1Vrms inputs so the 4V level is rareley needed. I've done many stereo installs and never need one.
If you come out talking sh1t don't try to turn around and wipe you azz.

Hmm, The max RMS volts that I get is 0.5, which is on the heaviest bass song I have. Can I still make it work with that level?

as a few of the prev posts.... get a preamp/EQ to make things a bit nicer for the amp. Gives you a bit more control over the sound too.... tweaking bass/treble.....
    Project - GAME OVER :(

I'm considering doing just that. Eliminate the stereo and just connect the computer directly to the amps. Hide a tape player under the drivers seat and use the computer is a mixer/volume control/head unit. A simple USB radio card will work for AM/FM. Basically, I want to free up the space in my dash for more gauges, and perhaps clean things up a little.
