good that you've eliminated the RAM as culprit. Just to be on the safe side: after trying the new Hyperion, change BIOS settings to "Fail-safe defaults" and to "Optimized defaults" if both fail (*) we can then look at your hard disk. Disable hibernation as Curiosity said and run diskcheck (thorough scan & fix) followed by defrag. Enable hibernate again afterwards.
If you still see the same issue reinstall WinXP (not nLite please) and select NTFS _normal_ format during setup.

(*) Apparently some of VIAs "fail-safe defaults" are not as fail-safe as their "optimized defaults"...

Both the memory and the HD are 100% new, I also tried a different RAM stick.

Tomorrow I'll do defrag and chkdsk

To be thorough do it in this order:
    a) In the BIOS select "Load Optimized settings" & "Save"
    b) disable hibernate
    c) reboot
    d) chkdsk C: and enable all options for fixing/checking
    e) defrag
    f) enable hibernate
