Stick with your roots... several names through out history have lost relevant meaning, but are icons.
Umm, "slashdot" is not a great name...it's descriptive of nothing to people who are not already familiar with the site. Slashdot didn't become well known because the name was catchy, or original, but because the content and concept combine to make it an interesting and informative place to gather and discuss techology. In short, the users make the site, which is also the case with mp3car.com.
Anyone of sufficient intelligence and drive to consider installing a computer/wonder gizmo of the future in their car is also of sufficient intelligence to find mp3car.com under the current name. However, there's not really a downside to buying related domain names that might be more descriptive and pointing them to mp3car.com, and that seems like a much more logical, easily implemented, and cost effective strategy than attempting to rebrand the entire site.

Just "built" a 2008 Taurus on the web. To get everything close to a STANDARD carputer, looks like it's about $5000. The sync itself just appears to be the voice command interface and runs about $400 ($20 for a really good mic at radio shack?).
So how about this:

I'd say go ahead and change the name--but keep the mp3car.com domain and point it to the new one. That way you'd have the best of both worlds--you keep the recognition/existing links would still work and the new name would recognize where this has come.
