    streetdeck does not require playlists. you can use playlists if you want. it uses folders. it will browse based on album title or artist title. I don't like playlists either so this method works best for me. however, I don't have all of the genres I have on my car pc, only 3 of them. because of this genres aren't necessary in my application.

    I really would suggest downloading the front ends and giving them a run through to determine if it would meet your needs.

    i don't use playlists in RR. Like my earlier post suggested, I just set up my directory structure the way I like to access the music. Usually, artist>albums>songs

    If you want to start with Genre, then create your directory structure like: genre\artists\albums\songs

    Roadrunner will pick up your ipod and play it with your playlist or genre\artists\albums\songs. but one thing it does not play is if you have videos in your ipod it will not play it. Only your MP3.

    Not trying to be difficult, but isn't organizing your music by genre the same as having a playlist with artist of a particular genre?

    I don't use RR, so I don't know if you set up playlists that were genre based wheter it then shows you the artists in that playlist or not...

    RR is built on winamp so as long as you have the lastest ver of winamp it will play mp4 and aac files. By default however, RR does not recognize these files and you have to go into the RR cfg and manually setup what files you can see in the audio browser to see other files types besides the basics.

    As far as the Genre, just use basic genres and creat playlists or sort them into folders. It's a little time consuming but works fine for me. Who wants to navigate through 31 genres while driving anyway to find a song? Seems unsafe to me.

    btw- StreetDeck has an area where you can select a Genre. All that would be required is that your files ID3 tags have the correct Genre typed in.

    Thanks folks!!

    I have started to install the hardware in the car and have not yet found much more time to look into front ends.

    I tried centrafuse but got frustrated by its current unability to play mp4s.

    I tried installing RoadRunner but got stopped at the error message saying that the skin was illegal. I would have thought that this is a common problem but haven't found the solution yet. Why does this thing not have an official installer? Yeah I know it's free so I'm not supposed to complain but nearly any other open source software I know comes with an installer.

    I tried Frodo Player and if I remember right it didn't give Genre choices.

    I remembered another feature in iTunes that I use which may be hard to duplicate: Intelligent playlists. I have some playlists that select whether track sshould be from CDs or not that I use a lot.

    So, I believe I'll actually use iTunes for an audio player and with a trackball or a touchpad for a while.

    @TyBong: It's too late for a Mac mini because the hardware is acquired and I'd have to run the TTQV navigation under an emulation. But BTW is there a current website for the AMP front end?

    @durwood: I think navigating through 31 genres first, then through albums or artists is not unsafer than navigating through 400 albums.

    @RedGTiVR6: OK I'll try street deck next real soon, I promise.

    I haven't seen roadrunner ever give that error and there is an installer for it. What link are you using to download it? might want to browse around in the Roadruner subforum.

    Also, are you referring to a "favorites" or ranking plugin? I think, but I'm not sure, RR has a plugin somewhere for that.

    Thanks all, sorry for lagging, I've got many other priorities other than the CarPC so my progress is slow. But at least my hardware is up and running other than the input controllers and I got my music going, for now still with iTunes.

    Well I remembered two more iTunes features that I depend on: 1) is the checkbox that lets me disable each track for playback. I don't wanna simply delete sucky tracks because I wanna keep my CDs complete for reference. 2) the last played info helps me to remember which CDs and tracks I haven't heard in a while. I still got at least half of my library never listened to since I ripped it and there is some good music to be rediscovered.

    Anyway, these are more reasons to maybe stick with iTunes and forego a front end, but I have not decided yet. Sorry to bore you with all this.

    @durwood:
    I retried the Road Runner install and this time it worked. Got it from
    http://carpcnet.com/modules.php?name...ddetails&lid=5

    It imported my 5600 tracks OK and seems to work fine.

    I was not specifically referring to "favorites" or ranking plugin, in fact I haven't figured out yet what these are.

    @RedGTiVR6:
    Tried the StreetDeck demo. I tend to like it, but can someone confirm if it's supposed to give me only one track per album in the demo version? Makes it kind of hard to evaluate.

    Anyway, I haven't decided on a front end yet, but I'll keep playing with them at e leasurely pace. But I do tend to stick with iTunes. Next, I'll try my Keyspan Express Remote URM-17A. The nifty thing is that it can control iTunes even when it's not in the front. So I could keep the TTQV navigation software in the front in the touchscreen mode and blindly control iTunes with the Keyspan remote that I can velcro somewhere on the center console.

    I'm working on a new frontend that depends on iTunes. It's not ready for primetime yet, but you know it'll be posted as soon as it's ready for testing. I'm mostly building it for my needs, but if there's enough clamoring for it, I'll make it modular for anyone to use.

    It'll also have GPS and OBDII features when I'm done.
